Robinson Peepers arrives at Jefferson Junior High School to find that he will have to wait a month before construction is finished on the new addition in which he was to teach. He is assigned to work with the current science teacher, Mr. Wadd, but Wadd resents the new addition to the faculty, and forces Peepers to sit on the sidelines. At lunch, Peepers' cafeteria tray inadvertently snags Wadd's toupee, revealing his baldness. When Wadd leaves in shame, Mr. Peepers is assigned to take his place.

Convinced that Peepers spends too much time reading and too little time in the gym, Coach Burr starts him on a rigorous exercise regimen. Meanwhile, Mr. Gurney is desperately seeking a competent chess player to represent Jefferson Junior High School in a local match against its arch rival. Thrilled to learn that Mr. Peepers is the Tri-State Chess Champion, Gurney insists that Peepers play in the tournament, despite his previous commitment to deliver a lecture to Mrs. Gurney's Wildflower group. However, his exercise program may prevent Peepers from doing either.

Mr. Peepers finds himself short of cash and a decent lunch when his first paycheck fails to arrive on time. The home economics teachers, worried about his diet, invite him over to taste their students' cooking projects, and sample some halibut they are about to prepare. The problems begin when Mr. Peepers loses his tie clip inside of the fish. As Mr. Peepers grapples with the halibut, Mr. Feebles attempts to fix the ventilating machine, which proceeds to suck up Mr. Peepers' paycheck, the halibut, and finally, Peepers himself.

When Mr. Feebles is injured, the Jefferson Junior High School faculty draws lots to divvy up his janitorial tasks. Mr. Peepers lands the job of drawing lines on the volleyball court, but discovers the line marking machine has a mind of its own.

Robinson and Nancy have finally saved enough money to purchase a household appliance they want, but Nancy's father points out how vitally important it is for Robinson to carry life insurance. Peepers' cousin Luther, an insurance man, sells them a policy and the initial premium payment depletes the savings which had been put away for the appliance.

When Mrs. Gurney and the Weskits discover the inadequacies of the Peepers' makeshift furniture, they plan a "furniture party" for Robinson and Nancy. Peepers arrives at Jefferson Junior High School six months early, and is immediately mistaken for a student. He is introduced to the faculty, then placed as assistant to the science teacher, Mr. Wadd. Jealous of the fact that the pretty music teacher likes Peepers, Mr. Wadd assigns him menial tasks and tries to sabotage his job. Mr. Peepers finally gets the best of Mr. Wadd by inadvertently revealing his baldness. When Wadd leaves in shame, Mr. Peepers is hired as the new science teacher.
