Thomas & Friends - Episode Guide

Based on the story of the same name from Thomas the Tank Engine.

Thomas is a tank engine who works at a big station on the Island of Sodor, shunting coaches to their proper places. He enjoys teasing the other engines, especially Gordon. But when his teasing goes too far, Gordon decides to teach him a lesson.

Edward is an old engine, and has not been out working for a while. His crew feels sorry for him, and decide to take him out one day. Not only that, but he helps Gordon the next day when he gets himself stuck on a hill.

Henry is a green engine, who is afraid of the rain, thinking it will spoil his lovely paintwork. One day, he runs into a tunnel and refuses to come out. After numerous attempts to move him, the Fat Controller decides to shut him in the tunnel.

Henry has been stuck in the tunnel for a long time now, and wishes he hadn't been so silly. But one day, Gordon goes too fast and bursts a safety valve right in front of the tunnel. Edward is the only engine available, but he can't push the heavy train without Henry's help, so Henry is let out.

Thomas gets bored of shunting, and wishes he could pull a train. The other engines believe that he's too impatient, but Thomas is determined to prove a point. When Henry is ill, his chance comes with disastrous results.

Thomas is fed up with shunting coaches in the yard, so Edward agrees to swap jobs the next day. However, Edward's train consists of trucks, which love to play tricks, especially on an engine not used to them, like Thomas.

When James, the red engine, comes off the rails, Thomas quickly comes to the rescue with a strange train called the Breakdown Train. The Fat Controller is so pleased with Thomas, he gives him his own branchline and two coaches as a reward.

James, after having an accident on his first day, is now trying to be really useful. He does however cause trouble, when he wets The Fat Controller's new top hat with steam, and then bumps coaches so hard that one of their brakes fail.

James is in big trouble with the Fat Controller. He has been confined to the shed for a long time, but is released to pull trucks. He works hard, and then takes a goods train up Gordon's Hill. The trucks misbehave, but James doesn't give up.

Gordon, boasting about himself as usual, says he knows the right Express line by instinct. Later, James finds out that Gordon was switched the wrong way and got lost. James is honoured when he is given the Express instead of Gordon.

Thomas thinks his branch line is the most important part of the whole railway. He soon becomes impatient, while waiting for Henry at the junction. Unfortunately, Thomas starts so quickly that he forgets his guard at the junction.

Thomas loves his branch line. He wants to fish after seeing people fishing, but the other engines say engines don't fish. The next day Thomas needs a drink, but the water tower is out of order, so Thomas' crew decides to get water from the river. However, there's a consequence and Thomas is in danger of blowing up!

Thomas meets Terence the Tractor, and says his wheels are ugly. Terence explains that they're caterpillar tracks, and he can go "anywhere". This comes in handy during the winter when Thomas doesn't use his snowplough and gets stuck in a snowdrift.

One morning, Thomas meets Bertie the bus. Bertie is to help Thomas deliver his passengers on his branch line, which makes Thomas cross. To solve their quarrel, Bertie challenges Thomas to a race.

Gordon, James, and Henry are upset that they have more work to do. Now that Thomas is gone, they have to shunt their own coaches. Because of always having to turn around to shunt, Gordon and James have trouble on the turntable. Gordon has to pull his train backwards, while James spins around like a top.

The big engines go on strike, so the Fat Controller asks Edward to work in the yard again. But Edward can't manage alone and is bullied by the bigger engines, so the Fat Controller buys a new engine called Percy and shuts the big engines up in the sheds. In the end, Thomas and Edward run the main line while Percy runs the branch line with Annie and Clarabel.

The big engines have been let out of the shed after they learn their lesson, and as reward, Percy, Edward and Thomas go and play on the branch line. However, Percy forgets Edward's warning about going on the main line and is almost caught in a collision with Gordon. Percy is so startled by Gordon that he knocks off his crew and uncontrollably runs away.

Henry isn't feeling well because his firebox is too small, and he can't make enough steam. The Fat Controller addresses the problem, and comes to a conclusion that Henry needs Welsh coal to preform well.

Henry is chosen to pull the "Flying Kipper". Everything goes well, but ice jams the points and snow forces down a signal set atd danger, leading to Henry crashing into another freight train on the siding. The Fat Controller sends Henry to Crewe to get a new shape and a larger firebox, making Henry the engine he always deserved to be.

Based on the stories "Gordon's Whistle and "Henry's Sneeze" from Henry the Green Engine.

Gordon is jealous about Henry's rebuild and complains about Henry whistling too much. Ironically, Gordon's whistle jams 'on' and he can't stop whistling. Meanwhile, some boys throw stones at Henry and break the coaches' windows. Henry's crew decided to pays them out by making Henry sneeze at the boys.

Toby the tram engine and his coach, Henrietta, have seen better days. They are quickly running out of work being replaced by road vehicles. The Fat Controller and his family meet them on their holiday, but Toby's line slowly closes down.

There's a quarry near Thomas' branch line. However, he gets in trouble with a policeman by going across the public road without cowcatchers and sideplates. When The Fat Controller hears about it, he buys Toby who brings Henrietta with him.

Toby and Henrietta are still new to the railway, and they often get teased by James about their old-fashioned appearance. However, James gets pushed by some trucks and crashes into some tar wagons, spoiling his own paintwork. Toby and Percy are the only engines who can help and delight in teasing him.

One morning Gordon is acting very difficult, especially when he's given a special goods train. He decides to jam the turntable to prove a point, but only proves to be silly when his attempt makes him slide into a ditch.

Thomas enjoys teasing Gordon for falling into a ditch. Annie and Clarabel are deeply shocked, but Thomas doesn't care a bit. Thomas then goes to a lead mine to collect some trucks. But when Thomas foolishly passes a danger board and falls down a mine, only a disgraced Gordon can help.

Based on the story of the same name, released alongside the series in 1984.

It's Christmas on the Island of Sodor. All the engines are busy with passengers and parcels, especially Thomas and Toby. Thomas wants to hold a special party for Mrs. Kyndley, after saving him from a nasty accident. Unfortunately, Mrs. Kyndley's house is snowed in and the two engines, along with Terence, have to save her.

Thomas brags to Percy and Toby about "how blue is the only proper colour for a really useful engine". He ends up getting trapped in a shower of coal under a coal hopper, and promptly blames an amused Percy. The two engines have a quarrel.

Gordon and Henry tease Edward after some cows break part of his train away. Several days later, the big engines end up with a cow blocking their lines and they become nervous around such a delicate animal. Edward soon has the last laugh.

Thomas' fireman isn't able to come in to work and Bertie agrees to take his passengers. Edward is unaware of the change of plan, and leaves before Bertie arrives. Bertie is determined to help the passengers catch their train, but each time Bertie stops, he misses Edward who's already moved on.

At the scrapyard, Edward meets a traction engine called Trevor, who is due to be broken up, despite being in good condition. Edward is determined to save him from scrap. He persuades the Vicar to purchase Trevor, and he goes to live in the Vicarage Orchard.

After one delay too many, James complains about Edward being too old and slow. The next day, two boys wander into James' cab and fiddle with his controls. James ends up running away down the line without a driver or fireman, and Edward is sent to chase after him with some help from an inspector.

Trevor the traction engine doesn't have much work at the vicarage orchard, so Edward takes him to help Thomas at the harbour. Slowly but surely, a skeptical Thomas gains a respect for the unusual-looking newcomer.

One day, Percy annoys Gordon and then tricks James into staying in the shed all day. When he gets into trouble with the Fat Controller, Percy decides to stay out of their way for a while. But when he is asked to take a train to Knapford he gets careless and for revenge, James and Gordon trick Percy into misreading a signal.

Percy is the laughing stock of the yard following his signal mishap. The Fat Controller buys a new engine named Montague, nicknamed Duck, to help out an overworked Percy. Gordon, James and Henry start ordering him about. Duck and Percy decide to take matters into their own "hands".

Percy is transferred to the harbour on Thomas' branchline. One day, Percy meets Harold the Helicopter, who says railways are slow and out-of-date. Percy is furious, and when he sees Harold again, he challenges him to a race.

Thomas isn't feeling well and is sent to the Works to be mended. Duck takes over Thomas' duties. Soon, Thomas returns from the Works with stiff handbrakes. This proves disastrous when a temporary fireman forgets to tighten them properly, sending Thomas, Annie and Clarabel on a runaway.

At the harbour, Percy is telling Bill and Ben about the time he braved bad weather, using the phrase "Water's nothing to an engine with determination". Henry calls Percy silly, to which he teases him about him staying in the tunnel. Later, Percy wants to see why he is forbidden to pass the danger board on the quay, but soon wishes he hadn't.

A diesel engine arrives on the island, and Duck is given the task of showing him around. Diesel boasts that his kind know everything, so Duck leaves him to shunt some trucks alone, with disastrous results. He makes a fool of himself and the trucks laugh rudely at him.

Diesel blames Duck for the aftermath of the other day. As revenge, Diesel tells lies to the trucks about the big engines, claiming that Duck told them. The big engines agree that Duck needs to be paid back for teasing them.

After being framed by Diesel, Duck is sent to Wellsworth. During his stay with Edward, Duck finds himself being chased by runaway trucks. He manages to control them, despite crashing into a barber's shop.

The arches on the Viaduct need strengthening, and the delay makes the big engines late to the junction. This makes Thomas very cross as he has to wait for the big engines, making him late with his own connection with Bertie the bus. Bertie gives Thomas a hard time, until he breaks down.

Donald and Douglas are twins whom the Fat Controller had bought from Scotland to help out, although only one engine had been expected. He intends to send one of them back, and a spiteful brake van doesn't help the twins at all.

When an early snowstorm blankets the island, Donald and Douglas work together to clear away heavy drifts of snow. After they help Henry from a snowdrift, the other engines are determined to help them out. Percy is chosen to ask the Fat Controller not to send the twins away because of their danger of being scrapped.

When Thomas' driver jokes that Thomas doesn't need him any more, Thomas misunderstands him and boasts to Percy and Toby that he doesn't need a driver. Thomas doesn't realise that his driver is only joking, and pays the price dearly after trying to move by himself and crashing straight into the stationmaster's house.

Daisy is bought to help Percy and Toby while Thomas is indisposed. The two engines show her around, but Daisy becomes a nuisance and they find her very difficult to please. Daisy proves to be very lazy and stubborn. She even insults the coaches, and refuses to take trucks. So she starts making excuses to avoid work.

Daisy continues to be lazy and stubborn, leaving Percy to do her jobs as well as his own. Toby offers to swap jobs with Percy so he can have a rest. Unfortunately, Percy has never worked at the quarry before, and the trucks are quick to take advantage of this. The trucks pay Percy out by making him crash into a brake van.

Bill and Ben are tank engine twins who work at the China Clay Works. One day, they are surprised when they discover that their trucks have gone missing. They mistakenly believe that their trucks were "magicked away" by a "diseasel." Their crews formulate a plan and make the twins look identical to trick BoCo.

The Fat Controller doesn't allow the heavier main engines to run on branch lines due to their weight, and Gordon believes the reason is because branch lines are vulgar. However, due to a green floppy hat, Edward is switched onto the main line and Gordon is mistakenly sent onto the branch line, where Bill and Ben are waiting.

Enthusiasts are visiting Sodor, and Edward is due to take them to meet Bill and Ben. On the journey back, the weather changes badly, and one of his crank pins breaks off. His crew are forced to remove his siderods and make adjustments to his coaches. Despite this, Edward battles on to bring his passengers safely home.

Percy tells Thomas and Toby about a ghost train his driver saw. Thomas doesn't believe him and calls him silly. Later, Percy ends up crashing into a cart and gets covered in lime. Percy and Toby decide to play a trick on Thomas.

Percy and Toby collect hay on the branch line, but this makes Thomas' passengers late. Percy is still teasing Thomas about the ghost incident and Thomas retorts back by calling him a "green caterpillar with red stripes." Things go wrong for Percy, he gets hit by a crate of treacle, then getting stuck on a hill and windswept with hay.

It's Christmas and all the engines are at work getting ready for the Christmas Party. Thomas is sent to collect the Christmas tree, but gets buried in a huge snowdrift on the way back. The Fat Controller tells the engines that Thomas must be found, so he sends Donald and Douglas to find him, with snowploughs on their fronts.

Based on the story "Percy and the Trousers" from Henry the Green Engine.

To keep their mind off the cold, Thomas and Percy talk about scarves. Later, Percy sees workmen wearing scarves and he longs for one to keep his funnel warm. However, when Percy goes to play a trick on the coaches, he accidentally gets his wish in a way he did not expect.

Percy makes a promise to Thomas that he will bring the Vicar's Sunday Class home safely. As he finishes his last job, he returns back to the station, where Annie and Clarabel are waiting. However, a heavy storm rages across the island and before long, Percy is in a flood so big that the water leaks in and douses his fire.

Based on the story "Double Header" from The Eight Famous Engines.

The Fat Controller decides to give Gordon a rest and James takes over his work. Meanwhile, Toby goes to the works, but thanks to a neglectful signalman and a small water tank, he is left stranded on the Main Line. James is furious when he finds out that he has to push Toby and pull the Express to the works.

Based on the story "Domeless Engines" from Duck and the Diesel Engine.

City of Truro, the first engine to go more than 100 miles an hour, visits Sodor. He becomes the centre of attention and Duck quickly befriends him. Gordon is jealous of the visitor's high-speed record and wants to prove he is just as special. He attempts to go as fast as him, only to have his dome blown off.

Based on the story of the same name from Oliver the Western Engine.

Duck has been working hard and as a reward the Fat Controller gives him his own branch line. He is conceited about his responsibility, until Donald loses patience and starts teasing Duck. Thanks to his driver and fireman, Duck is able to get his own back, but it is Donald who has the last laugh.

Based on the magazine stories "Hello, Thomas!" and "A Bump on the Line."

Thomas is late after taking some children home when their school bus breaks down and Thomas is afraid he will be replaced. He is very disappointed when the rails on his branch line buckle and he is sent to shunt in the yard while Bertie the bus takes his passengers until the bumpy track is repaired.

Based on the magazine stories "Percy's Night Out" and "Percy and the Dragon."

Thomas and Percy are friends, but Percy thinks it is funny to tease Thomas about being frightened, remembering the time he pretended to be a ghost and scared Thomas. But the next night, Thomas has to take a paper Chinese Dragon and as Percy sees it, he gets frightened and realises it is no fun being scared.

Percy and Duck are struggling to cope with their work at the harbour, so help is called in. They are horrified when Diesel returns. They are forced to give him a chance, but have to decide whether to speak up when he acts roughly and causes trouble. Diesel, thinking he can get away with anything, carelessly pushes several trucks into the sea.

Based on the magazine stories "Henry's Forest" and "Clearing Up."

Henry loves going to the forest to admire the scenery, but that is soon lost when the forest is decimated by a fierce storm. In order to make Henry feel happy again, the Fat Controller arranges for Toby, Terence and Trevor to plant new trees and replace the damaged ones.

Based on the story "Leaves" from Gordon the Big Engine.

Gordon is given goods work after refusing to get a wash down and spraying James with mud. He is too muddy to pull the Express, making James very boastful about getting the job. He becomes so conceited he does not pay attention to Gordon's warning about the muddy leaves on the hill.

Based on the magazine stories "The Express" and "A Passenger for James."

James gloats to Gordon that the Fat Controller has plans for him, but James is only bragging. One day, he lies to Thomas that he will be pulling the Express while Gordon has to take his trucks, but is soon found out and banished to the shed. James is soon let out and does his to best to redeem himself.

At night, Thomas and Percy have the important job of transporting the mail, but they are afraid that Harold will start stealing their traffic. Their fears, however, are dispelled after Thomas takes an important visitor home and bad weather grounds Harold.

Based on the magazine story "Bertie's Bumpy Roads."

Bertie loses his trust in the railway's service after it failed to deliver tar to mend the roads. Meanwhile, Gordon convinces James to pretend being sick so he will not have to shunt. Thomas offers to pull James' trucks while trying to keep his promise to Bertie to get tar delivered, but trouble ensues.

The quarry has a new diesel named Mavis, who is full of her own ideas. Despite being inexperienced, she refuses to take wise old Toby's advice. Soon she gets stuck at the level crossing with the Troublesome Trucks, blocking the roadway. Toby comes to her rescue and Mavis is left feeling very angry and embarrassed.

Based on the story of the same name from Tramway Engines.

Mavis has been confined to the quarry and is bitter about not being allowed on Toby's line, so she makes a plan with the Troublesome Trucks to go further down the line. However, things go wrong when Toby arrives instead. Toby is then put in grave danger when the trucks push him onto an unsafe bridge.

Based on the magazine stories "The Vicar's Fete" and "Edward and the Vicar."

The Vicar is hosting a garden party so all Sunday school children can go to the beach in the summer and Edward is determined to help in any way he can. Meanwhile Bertie teases Trevor about being old, but when he gets trapped in thick mud Trevor, with the help of Terence, comes to his rescue.

James boasts to Duck and BoCo about not being afraid of bees. But James' words do not come in handy when a beehive is broken by a porter and the bees cause havoc, forcing him to find a solution to get rid of the bees.

While watching the local regatta, Duck wishes to sail across the horizon despite Percy's comments. But after helping Harold deliver an injured sailor to hospital, he is reminded of how being on rails is still useful. Nowadays, Duck still dreams about travelling to the horizon, but appreciates that engines need their rails.

Based on the magazine stories "Head On" and "Pulling Together."

As a reward for their hard work, Bill and Ben are allowed to have a go on the turntable. Unfortunately, Bill is sent onto the same line as Ben and they end up buffer to buffer. Each badmouths the other for the incident and they decide to give each other the silent treatment, which creates a poor atmosphere in the yard. BoCo formulates a plan to resolve their problems.

Based on the story "Tenders for Henry" from Enterprising Engines.

A double-tendered engine arrives and Gordon becomes envious, especially when the others tease him against taking too many resources for himself. Although Gordon overcomes his problems, Henry boasts he deserves an extra tender for his hard work but Duck brings him back down to earth.

Based on the stories "Escape" and "Little Western" from Enterprising Engines.

Edward points out to Douglas that he and Trevor were spared from becoming scrap-metal and that help of another engine is needed. Douglas, who narrowly escaped the fate himself, is inspired that night to rescue Oliver, a Great Western engine and a brake van named Toad whom are stranded at the scrapyards.

Based on the story "Resource and Sagacity" from Oliver the Western Engine.

Oliver is new to the island and all the engines complimenting his courage makes him conceited. He pays no attention to Duck's warning about being careful with the Troublesome Trucks when he is asked to handle them for his next job and gets in a nasty accident in the turntable well. He pays dearly for it.

Duck meets Bulgy, a double-decker bus who is very opposed to railways. Bulgy and his friend steal Duck and Oliver's passengers by pretending to be a "railway bus" and taking them on an attempted shortcut. But what he does not realise is that a collapsing bridge has inadequate clearance.

Based on the magazine stories "In a Muddle" and "Heroes."

Bill and Ben mistrust a group of trucks into telling them how to set up things at the harbour station causing confusion and delay. However, they become heroes after saving the workers when a rock-slide suddenly strikes the clay works.

Based on the magazine story "Percy Gets Jammed."

James is rude towards Percy and does not care that Percy's trucks are the reason he is late. So Percy is smug when James breaks down while collecting fruit-trucks and he pulls the train instead. Trying to hurry himself to show off, Percy gets into an embarrassing accident with the cargo.

Thomas and Percy are not happy about dividing the jobs of mail-delivery and visiting the Mountain Village for Christmas, but things are worse for everybody when they find out that the village is cut off by snow.

Based on the story of the same name from Duke the Lost Engine.

Thomas tells the story of Duke, a narrow gauge engine who worked with Stuart, Falcon, and briefly Smudger. All three are happy together. However, when their railway closes due to bankruptcy, the young engines are sold and the old engine is left abandoned in a shed. Duke falls to asleep and everything around him changes.

Thomas continues his story of Duke. As many years passed, some rescuers begin an adventurous journey to find Duke and reunite him with his old friends Stuart and Falcon. The search grows harder and there is no sign of Duke, but the rescuers were just as determined to find him.

Falcon is sent to take the Mountain Road with Duke. However, he is impatient and does not pay attention to Duke's advice. He winds up dangling from a cliff. There are more problems, as Duke is out of water. Despite this, he clings on to Falcon like a Bulldog and manages to build up enough steam to save him.

Holidaymakers to the Island like riding in Duke's special train "The Picnic". One evening though Duke is too ill to manage on his own, so Falcon and Stuart assist him. Stuart teases Duke about this, but Duke gets his own back on Stuart by playing a trick on him and he proves that he still has a lot of life left in him.

Based on the stories, "Skarloey Remembers" and "Old Faithful" from Four Little Engines.

On the Skarloey Railway, Sir Handel (formerly known as Falcon) is pushed off the rails by some angry coaches. Skarloey, an old narrow gauge engine, is the only engine available to pull Sir Handel's train. He itches for a good run, and is determined to get his passengers home, even when one of his front spring breaks.

Based on the story, "Sir Handel" from Four Little Engines.

Skarloey and Rheneas are tired old engines who work very hard on their own line. Sir Handel and Peter Sam (formerly known as Falcon and Stuart) are brought in to help them. But Sir Handel is in a bad mood, he only makes matters worse by deliberately derailing himself to get out of work.

Based on the story of the same name from Four Little Engines.

Sir Topham Hatt has sent Sir Handel to the shed in disgrace, so Peter Sam is now single-handedly running the railway and extremely excited about his new position. One day, Henry threatens to leave without his passengers. In a haste to meet his connection, Peter Sam's eagerness almost leaves the Refreshment Lady behind.

Gordon advises Sir Handel to get out of work by pretending to be ill. leaving Peter Sam and Rusty, a new diesel engine, to take over his work. However, some trucks mistake Peter Sam for Sir Handel and crash into him at the incline.

Skarloey finally returns home after being repaired and meets Rusty. Peter Sam, still recovering, informs him of the newest arrival a careless and bad-tempered steam engine named Duncan. Soon, Skarloey is sent to Duncan's aid when he is stuck under a decrepit tunnel.

Rusty and the workmen have repaired the railway line while Skarloey was away being mended. He is concerned about Duncan, who ignores his warning about a broken section of track. With a tip from James, Duncan is off on his own and he is soon "rocking n' rolling" along the rails. Rusty grudgingly comes to the rescue.

Peter Sam's funnel is in bad condition from his accident. He has been promised a new funnel, but he starts to lose hope in it, especially when his funnel is knocked off by an icicle, and is temporarily replaced by a drainpipe. However, Peter Sam gives the other engines a run for their money once his new funnel arrives.

Sir Handel wants to prove that his special set of wheels make him superior. Skarloey, attempting to bring him down to size, tells him of an anti-railway steamroller named George, whom Sir Handel vows to pay out. But George and Sir Handel are too evenly hot-headed.

Duncan complains about not getting polished while the passengers and other engines get such luxuries. He gets so cross that he decides, "No polish means no passengers." His rudeness reaches its peak when he stops on the viaduct and refuses to move, angering the passengers.

Skarloey wants to talk some sense into Duncan, so he tells him the story of how Rheneas saved the railway from closure. One miserable day in particular, Rheneas was travelling home with a full train, went through a steep hill and crude weather for the sake of his passengers, even after suffering a serious breakdown.

When Rusty hears that an engine is needed to help run the Bluebell Railway, he suggests they search the same spot where Douglas found Oliver -the Other Railway. Only diesels go there now, so Rusty ventures out on his mission and meets a steam engine named Stepney, who is stranded in the scrapyard.

Based on the stories "Bluebells of England" and "Stepney's Special" from Stepney the "Bluebell" Engine.

Stepney is longing for good long run and is delighted to discover that he has been invited to visit the Fat Controller's railway. Thomas is jealous when the visiting engine is talked about more than he is. It does not help his anger when he is shunted on his own branch line for Stepney to pass with a special train that night.

Stepney's driver and fireman watch a game of cricket match while waiting at a signal. As Stepney sets off again, he doesn't realise that the ball has landed in one of his trucks. Caroline, an elderly car, sets off with the players in pursuit of Stepney, the trucks and the cricket ball along the branch line.

Stepney's visit is coming to an end, and a new visitor, a rude and snobbish Diesel, arrives. The stuck-up diesel makes a fool of himself when he sucks an inspector's bowler hat through his air-intake vent just as he is about to take the Express. Duck and Stepney, who has longed for a long run, volunteer in taking the train.

The big engines cheer up when a circus comes to Sodor, but it isn't long until Gordon and Henry become cross again as James gets to pull the circus train away. Later that day, Henry and the workmen are called to investigate a blockage in a tunnel, where he unhappily comes across an elephant.

Oliver is constantly ridiculed by the trucks for his turntable incident prompted by their ringleader, S.C. Ruffey. Toad advises Oliver on how to regain the trucks' respect. Oliver struggles to pull a goods train as S.C. Ruffey and the trucks hold him back, but Oliver is so determined that he accidentally pulls S.C. Ruffey apart.

Daisy teases Toby about his cowcatchers and side-plates. Toby tells her they are for stopping him from hurting animals if they stray on the line, but she claims that she would simply have to "toot" to scare them off. However, when she comes across a bull she realises that it will need more than a command to move it away.

Based on the story "The Fat Controller's Engines" from The Eight Famous Engines.

After the Fat Controller reads a letter inviting the engines to visit the mainland, he tells them going that they must show the other engines their tasks. Thomas shows Oliver how to manage the coaches, but recalls the time he beat Bertie in a race and becomes very conceited, putting his big trip in jeopardy.

It is a proud day for the Fat Controller's railway as the Queen is coming to visit. Henry misses the chance of pulling the Royal train after a paint accident. Gordon and Thomas, having made up for their disgrace, are given a special opportunity.

Extra vans are added to the Flying Kipper, and as a result, Henry needs a back engine to help him up Gordon's Hill. Duck offers to help, though Thomas warns him to take care reminding him of his own experience with fish. A badly attached tail lamp causes problems as Duck collides with the fishy train.

Based on the stories "Toby's Seaside Holiday" and "Bulstrode" from Toby, Trucks and Trouble.

Toby is eager to be involved in the seaside festival, but is upset when he realises there is not enough room for him. Meanwhile, Percy is called into the harbour to deal with Bulstrode, a highly disagreeable barge who never stops complaining. Bulstrode makes the trucks more troublesome than usual, though he pays dearly for it.

Tom Tipper, a postal-worker, is unhappy when his post van is replaced by a bicycle. Percy manages to help him out, but not in the way he intended, as he inadvertently flattens Tom's bike. In the end, Tom gets a smart new van.

A new crane called Cranky arrives at the docksand causes trouble for Thomas and Percy. A storm traps the big engines and Duck in the dockyard shed. A tramp steamer runs aground into the quayside, knocking down the shed, and causing Cranky to fall over. In order to rescue the other engines, Cranky needs Thomas and Percy's help.

Three very Horrid Lorries arrive on Sodor and start taking over the engines' jobs. Percy and Toby receive the worse at the end of the tether. But eventually, the tables are turned, as the lorries get their comeuppance in due course. The engines work even harder to ensure the lorries never return.

Gordon complains about the plainness of a new station, and longs for a panoramic view. But over time, he keeps breaking down, and in a way, gets the view he wants, just not the way he was expecting.

On his way to his wife's birthday, the Fat Controller's car becomes stuck in a pothole. He hitches a lift in Caroline, who breaks down, and then George, who loses control and crashes into a muddy pond. Thomas, luckily, is nearby and the Fat Controller is forced to act as his "relief" fireman to reach the party in time.

A dirty Thomas is mad at James for boasting about his shiny new coat of paint. James' bragging prevents him from listening to Henry, Percy and Terence's warnings about trees that are too close to the line. Later, James encounters a tree on the line and Thomas comes to his rescue.

Gordon has problems with his fire and the others joke of gremlins. Although the turntable in the goods yard malfunctions, Gordon manages to get to Kirk Ronan before Thomas to pick up a special visitor. At Wellsworth, the passenger's dog runs away and, after confronting a bull, runs away again into Thomas' cab.

George the Steamroller causes a great deal of trouble for the engines. He goes as far as bullying Percy, tarmacking asphalt over the tracks, causing Thomas to crash through a chicken coop, and causes Gordon to crash into one of Duck's trucks. The Fat Controller deals with him after.

Thomas, Percy and Toby talk about a competition for "The Best Dressed Station" that is being held across Sodor. But as Percy is helping decorate Maithwaite station,a hungry ram is found in the station as decorations are ruined. To everyone's amazement, the ram manages to find the real culprits.

Percy complains that he is overworked, though the others are unsympathetic. While working at the Coal Mine, some trucks escape from him and they crash inside the mine-shaft, which causes the entire mine to collapse. Percy and his crew try to escape, but are buried underneath coal. Luckily, they are saved by a canvas barrier.

Heavy storms have been flooding the Island. Toby is sent to inspect the dam, and discovers a few leaks in it. It eventually collapses, causing disaster for a nearby village. He is forced to cross an unsafe bridge over the flooded river, but it breaks and he drifts off towards a waterfall. Harold and Percy are sent to rescue Toby.

Henry refuses to believe in ghosts, until he and his crew encounter a series of spooky events during the night. The trucks tease him, but later down the old line, they become spooked too. In their fright, the trucks surge forward and plunge into a ravine. Henry soon realises that the "ghostly figure" is actually Old Bailey, a friendly fogman.

Bill and Ben are worried when they hear that Derek, a malfunctioning diesel, is going to help them work in the clay pits. The twins misunderstand him by thinking he has a toothache. Unfortunately, Derek's "teething troubles" cause more trouble than he is worth.

The Fat Controller invites Stepney to work with Toby and Mavis at the quarry. He impresses everyone so much that the foreman asks Stepney's driver to take a night special. He agrees, forgetting to ask for the Fat Controller's permission. Stepney gets lost on the way home, eventually arriving at the Smelter's Yard.

Toby takes the Hatts on an expedition, finding a castle and an old mine. The destinations are reopened, but Toby is spooked by Thomas' story about "The Old Warrior", who hunts engines at night

Henry is cross when Thomas delays him, and refuses to listen to his warning about a line eroded by high tides. The signalman isn't warned in time, and Henry is sent right down it.

Thomas and Percy discover an old coach named Old Slow Coach in the scrapyard, and want to save her. Later, a workman's hut is set on fire, and the workmen have no place to sleep. Percy suggests using Old Slow Coach, and she is soon restored to her former glory.

Thomas sees that a children's playground is closed, but that has to wait as the engines discover that Harold has been hired to show a special visitor around the island. Determined to show how fast he is, Gordon accidentally runs into a tunnel under repair. It turns out that the inspector was really there to find new sand for the children's playground.

Oliver is glum only shunting in the yard, and takes it on the trucks, causing an accident. He is put on mail duty instead. A signalman dozes off and they end up going down an old branch line.

Mrs. Kyndley asks Percy and his driver to make a "good luck package" for her daughter's wedding. They agree and slowly find the items as they go about their work.

The Fat Controller and his family go on holiday, though things start to go wrong. A low-flying bi-plane named Tiger Moth goes missing, so the Fat Controller and Harold search for it. He decides to go boating on a canal instead, though they become bogged down in mud.

Percy moans about his work in the mines and wants something exciting to happen. His wish comes true when a line of trucks breaks away from him on the hill, and the Fat Controller and Bertie chase them down.

Thomas tells James to think of others and that he will be much happier if he does. Later, James sees Mrs. Kyndley, who is upset her sister can't come and visitor. A "mystery tour" is arranged for her, and James is chosen for it.

Toad confesses to Oliver that he wishes to go forwards for a change, but the trucks are cross and promise to pay him out. On Gordon's Hill, the coupling snaps and Toad goes on a wild ride.

Duncan teases Peter Sam after some trucks fall into a ravine, so Rusty tells Duncan a ghost story to make him eat his own words. Duncan later has to cross the same ravine.

Rusty is suspicious of a strange boulder lodged in the mountains. A new machine called Thumper comes to work and causes chaos when he dislodges the boulder and it lets loose on the railway.

Thomas is cross with the snow, so Rusty tells him about Skarloey's own experience. His crew had stopped on the line to have some cocoa, but some slate trucks run through the buffers and into the ravine, causing an avalanche.

A new diesel, Salty, arrives on Sodor and hopes to be working by the sea. He is dismayed, however, when he is sent to work at the quarry. He tries to make the best of it by singing to the trucks, making Bill and Ben jealous.

An engine with a crane on his boiler named Harvey arrives, but the engines think he does not look anything like a normal engine. Harvey becomes reluctant to stay, but has his chance when Percy derails at Bulgy's Bridge.

Cranky must stay up all day and night to keep the docks running, which is why he is cranky all the time. A story by Salty makes him cranky enough to knock down a shed. This forces him to be stuck with Salty, Bill and Ben for the night.

Harold helps Percy deliver his mail, but Percy believes he is under threat. When he reaches a broken signal, he is forced to wait until the signal is fixed. He is even more upset when Harold comes to take his mail onward. Harold decides to take the mail all at once - with disastrous results.

Thomas is hauling a heavy special to Brendam when his siderods fall off. It happens that he broke down near an old shed. Inside, his crew discover a disused vintage lorry named Elizabeth, who they think can go to the Works to fetch new siderods.

Misty Valley is often very misty, which is why Cyril, a friendly fogman, puts detonators on the tracks to warn engines of oncoming mist. The Fat Controller replaces him with a fog horn, believing he needs a rest, but it turns out the fog horn is more trouble that it is worth.

Thomas brings the newest member of Jenny Packward's crew, Jack the front loader, to work. Jack is eager to be really useful and meets the rest of the members in his attempts to find a job. Oliver the Excavator is ordered to move a pile of rocks, but Jack foolishly tries to take them up the hill himself, leading to disaster.

Jack is in trouble from his previous incident, but has learned his lesson, as he resists jumping in. Ned, the clumsy steam shovel, knocks the keystone out of the bridge. It begins to fall as Thomas approaches it, so Jack jumps in and tries to hold it up with his bucket.

Thomas is told to deliver a Christmas tree to the Mountain Village with Toby, but becomes cross when he has to use his old snowplough. A rock on the line smashes Thomas' snowplough into a water tower. Thomas is determined to go the rest of the way without a snowplough.

Donald and Douglas crash into Trevor's cart and blame the other for the accident. They become so heated that they refuse to work together, so Donald is sent to work with Duck whilst Douglas continues on his own. At first, everything works out, but the two begin to miss each other.

Henry has an unfortunate accident, leading to Diesel returning to the railway. Diesel is insistent on proving that he is the strongest engine in the world, much to the trucks' amusement. They edge him on to pulling twenty trucks at once. Diesel pulls them so hard that he breaks loose, falls off the quay and lands on a barge.

Halloween rolls around and Edward tells the engines of a ghost engine that roams the Smelters, searching for his lost whistle. Thomas, Percy and Duck are sent to the Smelters to collect a special load, where Thomas teases Percy when he gets scared. Duck feels sorry for Percy and volunteers Thomas to be left on his own.

Whilst collecting some trucks from Maithwaite, Percy is spooked by a mine that sinks into the ground. Donald and Douglas make him even more frightened when they proclaim it is the naughty gnomes. Ironically, Percy is sent to collect garden gnomes for Lower Tidmouth, but is convinced that the garden gnomes are the cause of the mine's sinking.

The engines' collective dislike for being a middle engine is taken advantage of by 'Arry and Bert when they play a trick on Percy by shunting trucks in front of him. Henry accidentally bumps him onto the coal tipper, so James takes over. However, he is not immune from 'Arry and Bert's tricks himself.

Thomas collects a hot air balloon and takes it to Dryaw, where it is blown so holidaymakers can ride in it. Thomas and James become scared the balloon will steal their passengers. The balloon runs out of air though and it falls on top of James at a level crossing.

Thomas warns Percy and James of Jack Frost when the two have to collect coal for the stations. James is dismissive, but Percy becomes worried. His last stop needs more coal, so he decides to give them the rest of his and Elizabeth will bring him more in the morning. Throughout the night, snow and ice piles around him and while taking his own coal, James sees a snowed-under Percy and mistakes him for Jack Frost.

Gordon tells Salty it would not be dignified for him to pull trucks. That night, a fog is over the Docks and the trucks are piling up. Gordon is sent along with Thomas, Henry and Percy to clear them up. Gordon is furious and does not even notice that he is sent down a rickety, old branch line by mistake.

A new rule is put in place where the engines can only have one washdown per day, which leaves Percy cross, as he has all the dirty jobs. He desperately tries to not get dirty and finds a train of sugar for the chocolate factory. He thinks he will stay clean doing this job, but he could not be more wrong.

The Fat Controller inspects his quarry engines, only to find that Ben needs new buffers. Bill becomes jealous and cannot think of anything but Ben's new buffers. This makes him careless and he ends up damaging his own buffers regardless.

During a snowstorm, Toby is flagged down by Farmer McColl, whose sheep are due to give birth and urgently need a vet. At the next station, Toby explains and Duck and the vet set off for Farmer McColl's Field. However, even Duck's snowplough cannot cut through the snow and they are forced to retreat. Now, Toby must use his old line to save the lambs.

The famous singer Alicia Botti is coming for a concert and Thomas is chosen to take her. Thomas brags to Percy, who is very dirty compared to him. Along the way, Thomas and his crew hear a consistent squeak, but think nothing of it, until they discover what it really is.

Gordon boasts about being the fastest engine on Sodor and Thomas wishes he was faster. He is given the job of taking a jet engine to Dryaw, but Cranky carelessly turns it on. Thomas rockets down the line, even passing Gordon.

The big engines believe Edward has used up all of his steam and should be retired. Percy is concerned and tells the Fat Controller about it. Edward is sent to run a loop line with Stepney, while Duck has to deal with Edward's Troublesome Trucks. They become too much for him and he slowly stalls himself and Gordon. Only Edward can rescue them now.

Skarloey, Rheneas and Rusty are sent to work with Duncan at the quarry. Duncan demands everyone to work faster. The others are reluctant, leaving Duncan annoyed. He gets too impatient at the incline and ends up falling into a muddy ditch.

Mending Rheneas and Skarloey's line takes up too much of Rusty's time, so the Fat Controller closes the line down and sends everyone to the quarry. The quarry will be blasting for two weeks though, so Rusty decides to use that time to repair Rheneas and Skarloey's line. However, they cannot do it on their own and need Elizabeth's help to get the job done.

Peter Sam's whistle has been knocked off by a branch. Duncan finds this funny and remarks that an engine is not one without a whistle. Duncan whistles so much along his journey that his own whistle becomes loose. He loses it in a field and the replacement is very musical.

The only new coaches Emily can find are Annie and Clarabel. Thomas notices her with them and demands them back. The other engines are also angry with her, though Emily doesn't understand why. Meanwhile, Thomas collects new coaches and glumly thinks they're for himself. He heads straight for a section of track where two lines cross each other, where Oliver has broken down, and Emily has to save the both of them.

Percy is worried over a wobbly line and tries to tell the Fat Controller, but he's too late as Thomas sets off to collect a prize bull. It starts to rain, and Thomas gets trapped in a landslide. Percy believes Thomas is in trouble and goes off to rescue him.

Fergus believes he can keep Bill and Ben under control. He orders them about, telling them to "do it right" whenever they cause mischief. Bill and Ben become fed up with it, and decide to rebel. While pushing the rock rusher through the quarry, a rocks fall onto the tracks, and Fergus pushes Bill and Ben out of the way, leaving himself to be buried in rocks.

Skarloey puffs across a damaged bridge, and ends up dangling over the river below. Rheneas pulls him to safety, but Skarloey is afraid to cross it again. Rheneas has to take both of their trucks now, but runs out of water on the bridge. Skarloey must overcome his fear to save Rheneas.

Edward is excited when he is to take the brass band to a concert. Bad luck comes though, as a huge boiler from a ship knocks Edward on his side. Bertie takes the brass band to the concert as Edward is at the Works, but gets bogged down in mud.

Thomas, Percy and Henry are sent to collect coal trucks and take them to the docks. Emily is worried as she keeps seeing a line of water behind Henry. Thomas and Percy don't believe Henry is ill though and leave him a long line of trucks.

Gordon is irritated James covered him in mud at the washdown, so he tricks him into collecting the Queen of Sodor. He doesn't realise it is actually an old barge until he arrives. James is determined to prove that he can stay clean, even while pulling a dirty barge.

The Refreshment Lady is very busy, so Peter Sam is chosen to take her around the railway to find a spot for her new tea-shop. She can't decide, making Peter Sam disappointed. That night, a storm rolls across the island, and Peter Sam and Rusty find a solution to the problem.

A new tank engine named Arthur has a spotless record, meaning he has never been naughty or had an accident. Thomas gets a cheeky idea and plays a trick on Arthur to spoil his spotless record.

Toby's favourite place is the old windmill.One day, he is so distracted by its sails that he damages the flour sacks in his train. The windmill is put in further danger when it is struck by lightning.

Donald and Douglas like Castle Loch, as it reminds them of their old home in Scotland. They are instructed to take a special load for its special reopening. Douglas teases Percy about a possible monster, and he and Donald get into an argument. Disaster strikes when a fallen tree and landslide leave them stranded all night, leaving the twins to worry about the monster.

Rheneas is concerned he won't be special enough for some schoolchildren. His driver shows the children landmarks he sees daily. He is diverted onto an old mountain line and has a wild ride.

Salty collects Fergus from the Smelters. On the way home, Salty and Fergus come across the Lighthouse, with its generator broken down, which endangers a ship out at sea.

Oliver hates snow, though Toad thinks snow is splendid. They slowly see a giant snowman being built. While taking a special train to a mountain village, Oliver slips on some icy rails and he and Toad must spend the night in the snowman.

The Fat Controller is looking for engines to run the coastal line. Arthur wishes to, as he's already been there and sees it as his favourite place. Thomas is chosen instead, who complains about the smell of fish. A set of faulty points diverts Thomas onto an old pier and he falls into a tidal pool. Arthur is sent to help, and takes the fish to the Docks just in time. The Fat Controller needs a replacement, so Arthur swiftly volunteers.

When Duncan is asked to take an elephant statue to a new park, he carelessly leaves behind the brake van. He can't stop in time, and the elephant statue flies into the pond.

Murdoch arrives to lend a "hand" in the goods work. He gets annoyed when Salty and Harvey continuously ask questions. He longs for quiet time in the countryside but is dismayed when he encounters a flock of sheep.

Diesel is sent to help Fergus at the Cement Works, though he has not changed since his last visit as he causes confusion and delay. Diesel becomes annoyed with Fergus constantly telling him off. To get rid of him, he tricks Fergus into venturing into the scrapyard.

More summer holidaymakers are flocking to Sodor, but Thomas and Emily are being repaired, so no-one is running the branch line. The Fat Controller goes to Bulgy, who is delighted to be put back into service. Bulgy is restored and is brought back to his old field for the night. The hens miss their home and creep aboard in his luggage racks, without Bulgy noticing.

The Vicar is organising a Village Fete, and Thomas and Percy are taking goods and passengers. Harold feels left out of the celebrations and wishes to help in some way. He gets his chance when Pegasus, the carthorse, is stuck in a ditch.

Skarloey is often delayed as he has to take workmen to repair the line, and the Fat Controller is worried he may be late to the opening of the new station.. Harold has engine trouble, so the Fat Controller and Lady Hatt choose to ride the hot air balloon instead. The balloon's burner runs out of fuel, but they land in a tree next to Skarloey, who takes them to the grand opening.

The engines are celebrating May Day, and they are all decorated. James comes up with a "Best Dressed Engine" competition. Gordon wants to join, but sees decorations as undignified However, he becomes decorated anyway, though not in the way anyone expected.

Gordon is diverted onto a siding to a allow a sleek, silver engine to pass by. At the sheds, Gordon meets the splendid but arrogant streamliner named Spencer. Spencer is taking his owners, the Duke and Duchess, on a sightseeing trip of Sodor. Gordon advises Spencer to take on water, but he refuses to listen. This gets him into trouble as he runs out of water on Gordon's Hill.

Thomas is cross with Elizabeth for telling him he's not reliable enough when The Fat Controller assigns her to deliver some Christmas Puddings to the harbour.

Elizabeth gets stuck in a snowdrift, so Thomas and Terence have to rescue her in order for everyone to get their Christmas puddings on time.

Rusty hits a bump on an old bridge, so he alerts the other engines about it. Duncan doesn't trust him, especially when he needs more coal for the journey home. The nearest coal bunker was on the other side of the bridge, but Skarloey warns him not to cross it. Duncan doesn't listen, but runs out of coal and stops on the bridge. The bridge starts to collapse with the extra weight.

Thomas has to take some children to their annual sports day, and starts to dream of winning a medal. Thomas tells Percy and Bertie he wishes to have a medal too, so Percy suggests having a race. Thomas races Bertie again, but he has to stop as the Fat Controller explains he left the Sports Day medals at Knapford and orders Thomas go and collect them.

Thomas is so excited to collect the brass band that he leaves the tuba player behind. The band leader realises this and Thomas looks for the tuba player. Meanwhile, the tuba player tries to fetch rides so he can head to Maithwaite.

'Arry and Bert tease Percy for only having a whistle. Percy becomes cross and practices whistling louder out of spite, not realising he's causing trouble for Thomas and Bertie. Percy later regrets it, but can't resist another whistle and whistles so loud that a giant snowball collides into him. However, the next day, he spots a snowdrift on the line, and hears Thomas approaching. Percy uses his whistle to save him and learns how to use a whistle properly.

Thomas is sent to work at the quarry with Mavis, though it turns out Diesel is there too. Diesel gives Thomas a hard time, declaring the Fat Controller is planning to scrap steam engines. The next morning, Salty brings fresh diesel fuel. Diesel boasts about it, but the fuel makes all of the diesels on the island sick.

Henry usually pulls goods trains, but longs for a chance to pull the express.. Thomas tells Henry about the wishing tree, and Henry wishes that he could pull the express. The next day, his wish comes true, but he isn't used to coaches and gives the passengers a bad journey.

James had just been repainted and boasts to the others how he is special because of red paint. This puts Percy down, as he feels he isn't special. Later, James is sent to the coaling plant to help Percy deliver an important order, but James is too busy showing off along the way and Percy is left on his own.

Before the construction site of a new station, there is a difficult bend. Annie and Clarabel always assist Thomas with it, but they are due for an overhaul. Thomas doesn't feel really useful without his coaches, especially when he derails at the difficult bend. However, some trucks break away and head for the new station, and Thomas has to stop them in time.

Percy is overworked, which often makes him late. The dock manager has enough of it and tells the Fat Controller. That night, Percy overhears the Fat Controller telling his driver he will be sent to the scrapyard the following day. Percy is horrified and believes he is going to be scrapped.

Emily tells Thomas everything he's doing wrong, which irritates him to the point where he decides to ignore her completely. It is said that heavy snow is coming and everyone must wear their snowploughs. Emily heads to find Thomas, but he refuses to listen. He soon wishes he had.

Thomas has been working hard clearing the lines of snow. The engines want to thank him by organising a party, but they want it to be a surprise. Thomas becomes increasingly annoyed that they are not sharing the secret with him.

Emily is given the flour route for the summer, and James warns her of a monster in Black Loch. Emily's trucks cause her to crash and be late, so the Fat Controller transfers her to the Black Loch route. Emily is scared, but perseveres and discovers what the "monster" really is.

Thomas is upset that James gets the task of delivering fireworks instead of him. Along the way to Knapford, James breaks down. Thomas is sent to help James, but the clock is ticking, and the display looks like it'll be called off.

Percy is taking passengers for the first time in a long time, so Gordon teaches him how to treat coaches. Gordon uses this as an opportunity to show off, which leads to trouble.

There is to be a cleanliness competition, and Gordon, Emily and James believe they'll win. Thomas and Percy want to win too, but Thomas slowly loses confidence as the other engines arrive at the washdown before him.

Spencer comes back to Sodor, and the other engines are not pleased. Spencer challenges Edward to a race to The Duke and Duchess of Boxford's Summer House. The big engines don't think he can do it, but Edward proves that slow and steady can win the race.

Diesel tries to rattle Gordon by saying steam engines will be scrapped. Gordon doesn't believe him, but starts to worry when he hears a squeaking and rattling. If he slows down, the noise disappears, so he decides to go slowly, even when he has to take The Fat Controller and some children on a boating trip.

Thomas is told to take the circus train, and to share the load due to its weight. But Thomas wants all the glory, so he tries to pull the circus train all by himself. He turns down offers of help from Salty, Percy and James. He regrets his decision though as his siderods break from the weight.

Gordon and James hope to make as many journeys as possible. Thomas gets competitive too, but becomes upset when Farmer McColl stays in his cab to make sure his eggs are safe, and he has to go slowly.

Gordon is given the job of taking the newly-elected Mayor of Sodor around the island, so someone else has to pull the Express. Emily is chosen, but Gordon doesn't believe she can take the Express across the island and back before teatime like he can. Emily is determined to do the job as good as Gordon

Thomas is sent to help Arthur on the coastal branch, but he must only take five trucks due to rough track-work. However, Thomas hates the smell of fish and takes a long line of trucks to get the job over and done with. They take advantage of him though, and spiral out of control.

A storm blows off Farmer McColl's barn roof, so Emily is sent to collect timber to repair it. Along the way, she doesn't use her manners when the tracks are cleared. This lands her into trouble when Elizabeth refuses to take orders from her.

Thomas and Emily have to pick up a delivery of iron from the Smelters, and dismiss the existence of ghost. 'Arry and Bert scare them and make them question whether they may exist after all. A tarpaulin falls on Emily and accidentally scares herself as well as Thomas, 'Arry, and Bert.

Gordon believes Toby isn't a proper engine, which makes Toby nervous when he has to look after Wellsworth while Edward is at Brendam. He is uncertain he can do it but Thomas manages to encourage him The test comes when Gordon gets stuck on the hill and Toby has to push him.

James is cross when other engines cut him off because their jobs are more important. Then, James is given his own important job: delivering coal to all the stations. He is so arrogant that he refuses to take on water or help Edward, but realises his mistake when he runs out of water and nobody helps him.

Thomas had taken coal trucks all night, and is very tired the next morning. He takes on three jobs: taking chickens to market, sheep to the farm, and children to school. Gordon remarks that really useful engines do not need help, so Thomas decides he doesn't need it. Lack of sleep gets the better of him as he mixes the jobs up.

James and Toby are taking children to the seaside. Thomas is disappointed he can't until he delivers ice cream ingredients. Along his journey, he is delayed continuously.

Percy is excited about being given a special for a flower show, but is disappointed to find it's only a carpet. Salty suggests it is magic, like in stories he's heard of. Percy is doubtful, until the carpet flies away. He is amazed, but now he has to catch it.

Percy takes a fussy painter around Sodor so that he can paint a picture of "The Spirit of Sodor."

Scruff normally does not mind the way he looks, and is horrified when he is told to get a repaint. However, he soon becomes impressed with his new shiny coat, and refuses to work at the Waste Dump because he does not want to get dirty.

Winston feels ashamed that Sir Topham Hatt cannot drive him well, especially when the other engines tease him about it. Sir Topham Hatt constantly forgets to put on the brake, so Winston uses that idea to his advantage in an attempt to go driverless.

During a near-collision with Paxton, Gordon's boiler is damaged by a stone from the diesel's train. Gordon refuses to get looked over, and continues on. He soon craves more water as his boiler his leaking, but his constant stops annoy the passengers. Gordon becomes so impatient that his boiler nearly runs dry.

When one of Caitlin's tender brakes locks on, Caitlin's train is delayed until nightfall. By the time she reaches the Vicarstown Bridge, it is already closed for maintenance, so she has to spend the night on Sodor. She is so excited that she keeps everyone awake the entire night.

Stafford is disappointed children do not cheer for him the way they do for Thomas, and discovers it's because he makes little noise. Thomas and Percy feel sorry for him and teach him some noises that steam engines make, and Stafford soon learns to replicate them. Things go awry when his noisiness causes confusion and delay with a task that requires quietness.

Henry and Hiro take on some bad coal and start puffing out black smoke, but they do not notice until Duck informs them about it. Henry is worried and goes back to the sheds to wait for the new shipment of coal, but Hiro is determined to get his jobs done, regardless of the coal he's burning.

As the Blue Mountain Quarry is winding down for the night, Rheneas discovers a deer. Luke takes a liking to it, and wants to keep his new friend around. The others are not sure the quarry is the right place for an animal, but Luke is determined to prove them wrong.

Whilst delivering some stone to Ulfstead Castle, Luke meets Sir Robert Norramby and Millie for the first time. Luke and Millie decide to swap jobs for the day to get a taste of what each other's everyday work is like.

Charlie finds an elephant on the track and tries to alert the other engines, but no-one will take him seriously as they believe it's just another joke. Charlie starts to doubt himself, but discovers the elephant really did escape from the Sodor Animal Park and has to search for someone that'll believe him.

The Fat Controller warns the engines that the track at Knapford Bend is buckled, and to not be silly. However, Paxton finds the buckled track so fun to travel over that he forgets what he said. Thomas joins in too, but reverses too far and bumps into Toby at the water tower, dousing his fire. After overhearing Toby saying Thomas has "lost his puff" to Stafford, Paxton feels terrible and tries to find Thomas' "lost puff."

Harold's rotors jam up, so Duck has to take him to the rescue centre in order to be repaired, with Thomas as his back engine, to make sure Harold can fit through any low or narrow gaps. Thomas wants to show Harold Sodor's sights from the ground, but Duck wants to go directly and promptly to their destination. The two mindsets collide when each engine wants to perform the task their own way

Percy is making his first ever mail delivery up to Ulfstead Castle. To scare him, James makes up a story of a ghost engine who haunts the castle. Percy meets up with Stephen, who does not believe him until James arrives and tricks the both of them into being scared.

After Percy suffers a bout of bad luck, he starts to wonder if he is simply an unlucky engine. When he tells Stephen, Stephen decides to give Percy his old lucky horsehoe. Things seem to turn for the better for Percy, but when he realises he's lost it, he feels he cannot rescue Bill and Ben.

Bill and Ben are startled by Connor racing about, and believe he must be full of himself. The twins want revenge, and take advantage of his eagerness to win races by tricking Connor into thinking a little tank engine is beating him.

A team of railway inspectors visit the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre, and question whether Sir Topham Hatt needs two fire engines. He dismisses these concerns, but Flynn starts to believe that what they said was true when Belle puts out every fire before he does.

Thomas hides his snowplough on a siding, and pretends to not know where it went when questioned. Sir Topham Hatt leaves Thomas in the shed, resulting in Emily having to clear his branch line for him. She does not like the snow at first, but grows to enjoy it.

Sir Robert Norramby is organizing the Ulfstead Christmas Fair, and Sir Topham Hatt is asked to play Santa Claus. However, when he is told he will have to drive a sleigh, he begins to worry as he's never driven one before. When the sleigh finally arrives, Thomas has to rescue him when it breaks away on a hill.

Diesel 10 is cross that the Dieselworks has less decorations than Tidmouth Sheds. In an attempt to gain more, Diesel 10 steals Christmas decorations over the course of a few days, unbeknownst to the Steam Team. Percy is upset by this as it does not reflect the spirit of the holiday, and is determined to find out who it is.

The turntable at Tidmouth Sheds freezes in one position and the engines argue about who should get the one accessible berth. It is eventually agreed that Percy should get to use it as he will need someplace to rest after pulling the mail train. The other engines search for other places to sleep, but Gordon turns every shed down.

While Salty is being sent to the Dieselworks, Porter arrives at the docks to help out. Salty is convinced he has been sent to replace him, and becomes careless when he wants to return to the docks as soon as possible.

Edward is due to take a train from the docks to vicarstown, but is delayed. Harvey is the only engine available, but he is not sure if he can do it as it is the first time he has pulled a long train until Porter encourages him. However, he finds the task more difficult than he first thought.

Stephen is given the job of collecting ingredients for the afternoon tea at Ulfstead Castle. Spencer is not impressed, as he believes he's too slow. Later, on his way back to the castle, Gordon pulls up behind him and pushes him up to the junction. Spencer is shocked, so Stephen keeps up his charade by having other engines push him.

James is telling ghost stories, which frightens Percy. James boasts about being brave, so Henry challenges him to take "The Flying Kipper". James backs down after he smells the stench of the fish, and tricks Henry into believing it was all a dream.

Diesel and Hiro have very different approaches when it comes to dealing with Troublesome Trucks. Hiro prefers to be gentle and kind, while Diesel wants to show them who is boss. After an incident with some milk that Diesel spilled, he tries to get Hiro to toughen up with the trucks.

Thomas is puzzled as to how Bertie always wins their races. Bertie reveals he uses a shortcut as he's been re-routed. Thomas is annoyed by this, until Percy gives him the idea of using his own shortcut.

Gordon likes to tease Edward for being old and unreliable. One day, he mistakes a pair of red trousers for a red flag and gets stuck on his hill. Edward manages to push him over, though Gordon does not even say "thank you". Fed up with his attitude, Edward and Thomas put together a plan to teach him a lesson.

Annie and Clarabel often complain when Thomas is going too slow, or too fast. Thomas is being teasing them that he runs late. In a hurry, he them in the yard. Whilst he is away, Annie and Clarabel unexpectedly become part of Caitlin's high-speed train when Charlie accidentally shunts them behind her coaches.

After hearing an eerie whistling noise, Salty tells Thomas a story of some flatbeds which he called the "Flatbeds of Fear." Thomas tells the story to Henry and Emily. Henry hears the noises whilst taking some pipes to Vicarstown, and refuses to budge, leaving Emily to take over, who is determined to find a sensible explanation.

Diesel, Den, Dart and Sidney hide from Paxton as a joke, but Paxton takes the joke too seriously and thinks the diesels have all disappeared. Desperately, he searches around the island in search of a diesel.

Toby is nervous of going through Knapford junction as he does not know which signal is his. All morning, he tries to get through but instead nearly gets hit by the other engines. Once he finally collects the workmen, nobody believes him when he says his signal is red.

Toad is bored of hearing Oliver's story about how they escaped from scrap all the time. and wants his own story to tell. James agrees to take him on his goods train, and Toad has his own adventure on the main line.

Duck puffs straight into a flood, which douses his fire. James is sent to rescue him, which makes him cross as he was to take a passenger train. In his impatience, he takes off before Rocky's crane arm is secured, leading to a signal being knocked down.

Duck likes telling the engines at Tidmouth Sheds about his days on the Great Western Railway. James tells the Fat Controller about Duck's slip coaches, only he claims it was his own idea. James gets to run with them the next day, but realises he doesn't have the expertise that Duck does and runs into trouble.

Mavis is upset she doesn't get to see the sights of Sodor like the others do. Diesel offers to be her back engine, which means Thomas has to stay at the quarry, much to his dismay. He eventually finishes, but needs a back engine in order to take his train to the Docks. Thomas becomes fed up and tries to pull his train of stone alone.

Thomas meets a bird watcher who is looking for a rare bird. Along his journey, Thomas gets a shock as the bird watcher pulls the emergency cable, inside Annie, thinking he heard the rare bird. Annie develops a wheel flat and thus has to be taken to be repaired. Thomas becomes cross with the bird watcher for taking Annie out of commission, and refuses to stop at the station for him.

One of the passengers that boards Duncan's trains is very grumpy, and will complain about anything. Peter Sam is not so sure he has nothing to complain about, so Duncan tries his best to stop him from complaining. However, by doing this, he makes everyone else grumpy.

Marion is repairing an embankment when she hits something in the ground. She thinks she has found an old Viking ship, but it turns out to be a water pipe which springs a leak. As the leak gets bigger and bigger, Marion is afraid to tell someone and tries to find a solution herself.

Percy is missing his old friend Gator and begins to mope as he thinks about the times they had together. Percy tries not to think about him, but it only makes the matter worse. Later, when he goes to Ulfstead Castle to take some trucks of sculptures to the docks, they run down the hill and crash into Stephen's mine. To find the trucks, Percy must follow Gator's advice and venture inside, all on his own.

In a rush to beat his twin in a race, Ben forgets to collect the coal that had arrived at the docks. He and Bill continue to mess about, teasing Timothy about how he's the odd-one-out all the while. Eventually, Bill and Ben run out of coal and need Timothy's help.

Spencer is taking a Deputy Minister to Sodor, but he ignores all the signals he encounters and he ends up travelling down Edward's branch line instead of the main line. This causes him to arrive at Knapford late, making the Deputy Minister cross. As he does not want to ride him on the return journey, all the engines want a chance to take him, and begin to show-off.

Gator is waiting for his ship, but grows bored as there's nothing to do. That night, he is given the task of taking Oliver's train to the docks, as Oliver has broken down. He and Toad get acquainted, but Gator's lamp continuously stops working, and Toad keeps forcing him to turn it back on again. Gator becomes fed up and decides to leave him behind.

Gator returns to the island for Christmas. Thomas discovers Gator has returned, and excitedly tells Percy about it. Percy and Gator want to see each other again, but Percy keeps missing him as Gator mistakes where his delivery of rock salt is meant to go.

Connor has to take passengers home from the mainland, but some get left behind that want to return home in time for Christmas. Connor promises to come back for them, but the clock is ticking as all the other engines are starting to struggle to clear the tracks for him.

Duncan is grumbling at Christmas time and the engines begin to lose their Christmas spirit. In an attempt to fix the issue, Mr. Percival says that Duncan can be first in line for a new coat of paint if he stays cheery all day. Duncan tries to do just that, but he finds it more difficult than he thought.

Whilst the rest of the island is being decorated for Christmas, the scrapyard still looks the same. Percy feels Reg is missing out on the holiday, so he tries to find a gift for him. However, every gift he gets doesn't seem to suit Reg's fancy.

Emily is down as she feels she has never had a special delivery, while everyone else around her as. Due to this, she gets very excited when she is asked to deliver a globe to the Animal Park. The strap break off and the globe starts rolling across the railway.

Bill and Ben send Timothy on a wild goose chase for a rainbow truck. Timothy searches for one, but cannot find one anywhere.

Marion is spooked by some lifelike dinosaur models, and thinks they are real dinosaurs. She runs all the way up to Ulfstead Castle, where she, Stephen and Millie discover it was all part of the Earl's new dinosaur park.

On his first night on Sodor, Samson ends up getting stuck at the Blue Mountain Quarry due to him being too proud to ask for help. Later, the Fat Controller tells him to take stone to the quarry. Various engines tease him for his mistake. Not wanting to make another one, he ends up taking Gordon's express coaches as he's too stubborn to listen.

Scruff blows his gasket at Crocks Scrap Yard and Samson is told to take over Scruff's work. However, he takes his job a little too far as he collects everything that's beside the line, whether it's scrap or not, such as a postman's bicycle, Bertie's bus stop sign and the Fat Controller's car.

Samson and Harvey are working at the Earl's new dinosaur park and Harvey nearly hits Millie with a dinosaur model's head. Millie is frightened and the two call her a scaredy engine for it. Insulted, she decides to teach them a lesson by using the model volcano, but she goes too far.

Daisy is sad when Christmas doesn't go as planned.
