Queen Sugar is Refined!

Hahahah see what I did there? But in all seriousness, Queen Sugar, on OWN and created by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey and adapted from the book of the same name is slow, dramatic, and beautiful. Queen Sugar tells the story of the Bordelon siblings who return to their family’s farm in New Orleans after their dad has a stroke. Check out the trailer here.

Now not only is this a beautiful show, but it seems it’s going to show us something different. Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley) aka Tara from True Blood (who was fucking wasted in that show might I say, but a lot of things were), appears to believe in voodoo, but doesn’t appear to be possessed by it. She’s a drug dealing activist who threatens to sell to others when one of her dealers squirms under the idea of marching. Now that is a fantastic character.

Ralph Angel Bordelon (Kofi Siriboe) is an ex-felon who is struggling to raise his son and find a solid good paying job. His son Blue (Ethan Hutchinson) is fantastic and their relationship will be something worth watching throughout this show, as is the relationship that Ralph Angel has with his father Ernest (Glynn Turman). There’s going to be something within this show that hasn’t really been seen, that often at least, with these three characters, which is how they all relate to one another as they grow and come into their own skin.

I also want to mention Violet Bordelon (Tina Lifford) who is aunt to the three siblings and Hollywood Desonier (Omar J. Dorsey) who is with Violet. Both of these characters are really given some room to show themselves in the first episode and you get a feeling for their playfulness and strength that both of them can rely on in times of need. They are going to be a great couple to watch.

And finally Charley Bordelon West (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) who is college graduate married to a basketball star who really struggles when a personal controversy is revealed. Her character was given a lot of screen time within the first episode, but I wasn’t able to really see her work. But I am interested to see where she’ll take it. At the end of the episode, Charley is given some room to really express herself and she truly does.

The only problem that I have with this show is that it might not be quick enough or thrilling enough to keep my attention. Only time will tell and I will give the second episode a shot, given just how much I love DuVernay’s work, but I did notice that the show hadn’t really hooked me yet.

Have you seen Queen Sugar? If so, what did you think? Let me know below!
