Ratings Roundup Week of November 26, 2017

Charlie Brown and Ruldoph did well for ABC and CBS last week. The CW had a ratings hit with its four show two day crossover event. One show was officially canceled while another received the gift of an episode extension.

The superheroes won out last week on The CW. The Flash held at its usual rating, and the other three programs in the crossover all rose by several points and pushed Supernatural out of the number two slot. The other item of note for CW execs was special episodes for two summer series' and a Christmas special all outstripped Dynasty by an embarrassing amount.

FOX had a win with the Big Ten Championship game, Empire and Star reclaimed their usual one-two spots for dramas with new episodes. FOX announced last week Ghosted earned an additional six episodes this season along with a new showrunner. The show should see an easy renewal. The Exorcist wallowed at the bottom of the ratings chart again last week, not even able to beat reruns of Lucifer and The Gifted to help its cause.

NBC managed four scripted shows last week, five if you count VIntage SNL. The Dick Wolfe programs of Chicago Med and Chicago PD landed nearly identical numbers and both are right at the network average so should see another season. Blindspot was well below the average again last week, but being in season three, should get renewed as well.

CBS surprised no one and announced Wisdom of the Crowd would end after its initial thirteen episodes, though they blamed allegations against show star Jeremy Piven as the reason instead of the low ratings. Holiday favorite, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, boosted the week for CBS, topping the ratings NCIS usually brought to the time-slot, no easy task. The Monday comedy block rebounded slightly last week, enough that if it can hold, Superior Donuts might see another season, but not enough to save 9JKL. Madam Secretary took the bottom slot again last week, only managing to beat 48 Hours and a repeat of NCIS New Orleans. The show is in season four and by rights, should be cancelled by the end of the season.

ABC premiered Agents of SHIELD last week, to slightly lower numbers than where it ended last season. Designated Survivor was also low again last week, sandwiched between two blocks of reruns. A Charlie Brown Christmas landed as the second highest rated show for the network, only slightly lower than Grey's Anatomy in the time-slot. The Good Doctor continued to ride the top of the ratings chart, again last week.

The Fall new shows took a beating this year, with only a few making it past the holidays and into January. But the Winter/Spring premieres are right around the corner. What's still coming that you are excited to see in the new year?

There's a few shows I'm looking forward to returning/premiering in 2018: Black Lightning, Brockmire and Legion. For Black Lightning, I hope it's as entertaining as the other DC shows on CW. Brockmire, I hope it'll have more than 8 episodes for its second season. And Legion? Well, I hope it's not as much of a head scratcher for me as the first season was.
