Ratings Roundup Week of February 25, 2018

After a two-week break, most network programs ran new episodes last week. Every network except ABC also started their Spring premieres. Ratings in the Spring are usually lower than numbers posted in the Fall, so a bit of a dip in the numbers for your favorite shows is expected and shouldn't be cause for alarm.

CBS premiered two shows last week, Survivor and Living Biblically. Survivor started about where it was in the fall. Living Biblically opened with a whimper, about where 9JKL was in the same slot, but 9JKL is most likely canceled, so … CBS' comedies all did well, Life in Pieces, Kevin Can Wait, and Man with a Plan all scoring respectable numbers, though all were a tenth lower than the pre-Olympics break.

NBC had a pair of premieres and a half of a premiere last week. The Voice roared back to the top of the ratings chart behind the Closing Ceremony for the Olympics. Riding that wave allowed Good Girls to get off to a good start as well. New comedy, AP Bio, ran its first episode since the beginning of February and while it benefited from the rating boost off the Olympics, once it was in its regular time slot it sank back down to where it premiered. If the numbers don't come up by a good amount, the show isn't long for the screen. NBC has too many other high rated shows to give it much leeway. Fans of Taken can start to worry as well, the numbers are not at a level to expect a season three even though they were a bit higher than the pre-Olympics ratings.

No new or returning shows premiered in ABC last week. Grey's Anatomy reclaimed its top spot while The Good Doctor dipped a couple of tenths. How To Get Away With Murder benefited from its crossover episode with Scandal, rising several tenths from its usual numbers. Agents of SHIELD and Once Upon A Time were in a race to the bottom with the fairy-tale series taking the dubious honor.

FOX had two premiere last week, Masterchef Junior, started with a healthy number behind Lethal Weapon and 9-1-1, the latter getting really comfy in that number one spot. Showtime at the Apollo opened low, but considering its a variety show and therefore cheaper to make, could be enough for future seasons.

Not to be left out, The CW had one premiere last week; iZombie returned about where it ended last season. It seems Arrow has decided 0.4 is the new normal as the series has sat at that number for the last month (not counting repeats). Jane The Virgin continues to wallow at the bottom of the chart, an original episode not able to beat out repeats of three other shows.

Renewal news should start trickling out in the coming weeks, so it's do-or-die time for programs with marginal numbers. Networks should start announcing their Fall schedules the first week of May.

Cool, thanks LadyShelley. :)

I did some hunting around, I can't find anything on an episode order, but seeing as how it's a spring show, it's not more than 13 episodes.

LadyShelley posted 6 years ago

So quick crash course in ratings. Think of the rating itself (the 0.4) as the percentage of people aged 18-49 who watched that episode. The second number, millions of viewers, is just what it says on the tin, that's the actual number of people who watched the episode aged 18-49. I add the millions of viewers as a sort of "tie-breaker" when shows have the same rating, you can get an idea of the actual viewership as well. Number of viewers is calculated through Nielsen boxes (used to be actual paper diaries people kept of what they watched for a week or a month, now it's a box connected to your TV). So it's a statistics game, Nielsen has enough boxes out there to get a statistical model of what people are watching. This is why, unless you have one of those boxes, it doesn't matter how you as an individual watches a show (Live, DVR, streaming, etc.) your viewing habits are part of the overall model.

So far Living Biblically is kinda cute, I might watch it all. Any ideas on how many episodes were ordered/filmed for it? And I noticed that Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow both had ratings of .4, though the next column said that that Arrow had 1.1 million viewers to Legends of Tomorrow's 1.5 million. How are the number of viewers calculated?

LadyShelley posted 6 years ago

I've heard from folks still watching that this is actually one of their best seasons, too little too late? I doubt Disney is going to be able to strong-arm them into another season regardless of what plans they may have for the MCU.

Really sad to see that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is doing so badly.
