Ratings Roundup Week of January 6, 2019

Welcome to the backside of the 2018-19 season! It's getting to be do or die for a number of programs, mostly half-hour comedies as we head into the Spring. With only a few exceptions, most of the currently airing one hour dramas are probably safe for another year. Several networks, however, ordered more half-hour comedies than they have schedule room. There won't be much leeway given to those shows to find or hold an audience, as schedules will need to be thinned in the coming months.

ABC premiered three new shows last week. Match Game returned for its fourth season, while The Bachelor started its twenty-third. Schooled was the only new-new premiere. The Goldbergs spinoff started well, time will tell if it can hold on to those numbers. The Conners remained on top of the scripted charts while The Rookie appears to have settled with low numbers. Fans should probably enjoy what remains as the chances of the Nathan Fillion series being renewed are slim. Likewise, Speechless is probably done.

CBS had one renewal and one new show premiere last week. Criminal Minds was renewed for a final (and short) season. Fam opened with good numbers, much better than Murphy Brown in the same slot. The test will be the next two weeks, to see how much it slips. God Friended Me had a good week, even without the NFL assist and the show should get a second season. MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 were both up a tenth over where they ended before the holidays. SEAL Team was steady.

NBC's big news last week was the premiere of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The comedy series had one of its biggest ratings nights in the last two years, much higher than the numbers it scored when on FOX. How much is looky-loos and how much the series will be able to hold its audience, time will tell. The Peacock also premiered two "unscripted" series' last week. America's Got Talent: The Champions and Ellen's Game of Games both opened well. The Blacklist had more Friday night problems, to the point fans might want to start worrying about its future.

FOX's surprise hit The Masked Singer was the highest rated program by more than a ratings point last week. The Orville was up a tenth from last week, while Gotham and Lethal Weapon were steady. Fans of Rel hopefully enjoyed the last episode, the show is likely cancelled.

How did your favorites do last week? Are you watching any of the new programs?

There are a lot of new half hour comedies out this season, too many to fit on network schedules. I have the feeling when the new seasons are announced, most of these will be one and done series'.

I watched Schooled and thought the episode was pretty good, I hope the others will be as well. I gave Fam a shot, I thought the commercials for it looked funnier than the pilot episode. After the second episode I'm not sure how much I'll watch of it.
