Carl's happily married to his best friend from college, Maggie. They moved out of London together when their children were small, so they could afford more space. The kids are now teenagers and he's been taking the same train from his suburban town into work for 12 years. He has a good, if slightly precarious, job as a Commercial Property Sales Executive. Each morning he'll fight his way onto the 7.39 with all the other commuters, read the paper, put in the hours at work, then return home again on the 18.49. And if he's very lucky, he'll keep this up for another 20 years.
