The wife of Harry Palmer, a Porter farmer, Jan decided to have her husband killed. She convinced ranch hand Les Crane that she was in love with him, and talked Les into killing Harry. They pinned the murder on a saddle bum, Joe Crobett, and things looked good.
However, Marcy James was in love with Joe and came to Porter. She lied and said that she saw another man kill Harry... unaware that she was actually telling the truth. Jan had Les try and kill Marcy, and then Jan killed Les herself to cover his tracks after she thought he succeeded. However, Hoby Gilman heard the gunshots and confronted Jan. She tried to convince the Ranger that Les had killed Harry and was going to kill her as well, but her story quickly fell apart and Hoby arrested her.
