Caleb is an irascible practical joker who doesn't always show good judgment in who picks as the butt of his pranks. He has a gang of cronies that hang around him and are endlessly amused by his jokes. However, Caleb's wife Nora and the local saloon owner Ma Kafka are less than amused.
When Caleb plays one prank too many on a gambler, Abner Blessington, passing through town, Nora asks Paladin to teach Caleb a lesson. Paladin engineers it so that Caleb's prank--to trick Abner into thinking Nora is in love with him--backfires when Nora plays along. Caleb is forced to call Abner out to defend Nora's honor, and Paladin steps in when Caleb admits that he's no gunfighter. However, afterward Caleb tips a wink to Paladin, suggesting that he knew all along that it was a practical joke on him and that he appreciated it.
