Seeing a dire need in the community for on-the spot medical assistance, LA County Firefighters Roy DeSoto and John Roderick "Johnny" Gage attempt to convince their staunchest opponent, Rampart General Hospital's Chief of Emergency Services, Dr. Kelly Brackett, to support paramedic legislation that means getting help to where it is needed most. Dr. Joe Early, an old friend of Dr. Brackett's, also lends his support to Johnny's & Roy's effort. Prior to running two separate calls with Johnny and Roy, their mentor, Rampart General Hospital's Chief Nurse of the Emergency Room, Dixie McCall, is injured and knocked unconscious.

After Roy DeSoto encouraged his young, impulsive partner, Johnny Gage, to join the paramedic program, their first mission was to face their staunchest opponent, Chief of Emergency Services, Dr. Kelly Brackett, to support paramedic legislation that means getting help to where it is needed most. His partner, Chief Nurse of the Emergency Room, Ms. Dixie McCall, who's also the teacher and friend of Roy's and Johnny's, encourages her best buddy to, after he was opposed to this. Their colleague, Dr. Joe Early, also lends his support to Johnny's and Roy's effort. Dixie is injured and knocked unconscious, in a freak scene, who contributed vasovagal syncope, after running two separate calls with Johnny and Roy, when she was the last person to get involved in an accident, after 2 people were involved in a car accident, over the cliff, with two injuries.
