Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, Lee Remick moved with her mother to New York City at a young age and was enrolled in the Hewitt School, an exclusive day school. She attended after-school classes in ballet, modern dance, speech, as well as theatrical costume and scene design. In the spring of 1952 she answered an ad for dancers in summer stock in Hyannis, MA, lied about her age and was performing in ten different shows over ten weeks. Over the next five years she began appearing in a variety of roles on television, made an impact in her film debut in the 1957 film A Face in the Crowd, and became a star with her movie role in The Long Hot Summer.
