Matt Wells

Matt Wells is a Canadian actor, writer, musician, producer, TV presenter, and film & music journalist. He was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and grew up in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador. He moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2000, and then to Toronto, Ontario in 2007. Wells is best known for his work in the award-winning and critically acclaimed independent film Crown and Anchor (2018) which he created, produced and co-starred.

His path began writing songs and fronting the notorious Newfoundland punk/hardcore band Bucket Truck from 1996 to 2007; releasing 4 albums, 10 self-produced music videos, and travelling the world while sharing stages with Slayer, Our Lady Peace, D.O.A, Green Day, Damage Plan, Fishbone, and Lagwagon. This journey directly led to him embarking on a career as an acclaimed music/film journalist for Much Music, The New Music, Bravo and MTV where Wells has interviewed everyone from The Police, Quentin Tarantino, Lee Daniels, and John Lydon to Lou Reed, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Ben Kingsley, Zack Snyder and Lady Gaga. As a solo musician, Wells has released 2 albums and shared the stage with Sammy Hagar, Levon Helm, Great Big Sea, and Tom Cochrane.

He began in national television on MuchMusic in 2002 as host of the show Going Coastal, followed by Where You at Baby? and later became a presenter on MuchMore. As an actor, he has appeared in Prison Dancer (2012), Beauty and the Beast (2012), Rogue (2015), Air Crash Investigation (2016), Bitten (2016), Designated Survivor (2017), Dark Matter (2017), The Detectives (2018), Diggstown (2020), Schitt's Creek (2020), Murdoch Mysteries (2021), SkyMed (2022), Hudson & Rex (2022), and Titans (2022).

He has also appeared in the multiple award-winning short film Poison in the Water (2017) which he co-wrote with his daughter. Wells's most recent short film The New Normal (2020) won Best International Comedy at the 2021 Venice Film Awards and is an official selection at both The London International Film Festival and Berlin Flash Film Festival.
