Born in New York City, Gaby Hoffmann began acting in commercials at age four, and was cast in the role of Karin Kinsella in the 1989 film Field of Dreams. She was raised in Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel until 1993, when at the age of twelve, she, her sister Alexandra Auder, and her mother moved to Los Angeles.
