DCI John Luther returns to work after the traumatic arrest of a serial killer, and his first case is to investigate the seemingly perfect murder of a former child genius's parents. However, everything is not as it first seems, and when Luther is unable to find evidence to convict, he becomes embroiled in a battle of wits with the suspect - who has set her sights on him and his estranged wife.

DCI Luther must outmanoeuvre a trained sniper on a mission to kill police officers. But as the body count rises and the killer's true motives are revealed, Luther puts himself in the line of fire to try and draw the killer into the open. But when the team discover they have a vigilante killer at the beginning of a crusade walking the streets, Luther must confront his darkest demons in order to bring him to justice. Meanwhile, Gray and Stark visit Luther's new girlfriend Mary with a warning.
