Murphy is a hard-living, hard-drinking, disaffected twenty-something with a penchant for cigarettes and casual sex. She's also blind. Murphy lives with her supportive best friend, Jess, and—more reluctantly—her trusty guide dog, Pretzel, whose presence she resents. Her parents, Hank and Joy, own a guide dog school, a venture they opened hoping it would give Murphy a job with some purpose. Murphy's closest friend is a sweet teenager named Tyson, whose kindness and intelligence are currently going to waste as he deals drugs on the street for his older cousin, Darnell. Murphy's life comes crashing down when, while out for a walk with Pretzel, she stumbles upon what she's sure is the lifeless body of Tyson in the alley outside her apartment. But when the police arrive, including a salt-of-the-earth detective named Dean, there is no body to be found—and with Murphy not exactly sober, the police aren't especially inclined to investigate. Murphy is devastated, and the only thing holding her back from spiraling downward even further is her resolve to learn what happened to Tyson.

After Murphy's latest one night stand calls her "Mommy," she develops a rather unexpected lead in Tyson's case; Tyson's mother. Her lead provides rather daunting results so she tracks down Tyson's cousin Darnell and encounters his "business associate" Max who is immediately smitten with Murphy. Meanwhile, Chloe thinks it's time for her father Dean to start a dating profile. Lastly, Murphy helps Jess pick out a special gift for her girlfriend Vanessa.

Murphy enlists an unwitting Felix to help her organize an outreach presentation at Fairview High so she can do some digging around to try and locate Tysons girlfriend Kira. When the presentation goes awry, Murphy and Felix take a smoke break under the bleachers and have their first heart-to-heart. Meanwhile, Dean does his best to be there for Chloe as she experience's a rite of passage.

Jess reluctantly agrees to let Murphy go alone with Max on a day trip. While traveling, Murphy has a flashback of memories of Tyson. Meanwhile, it's puppy graduation day at Guiding Hope, and one of the foster's is having a hard time letting go.

Murphy gets a pregnancy scare, goes to extreme measures to find out if Tyson is really dead, and gets into a scary situation.

Murphy, unable to deal with things, begins to push everyone away, including Max. Meanwhile, Murphy and Jess have a heart-to-heart.

While hanging out with Max in his food truck, Murphy is shocked to hear a familiar voice screaming outside. Meanwhile, Murphy offers to watch Chloe so Dean can go on a date, but things get a little crazy after she does the one thing he asks her not to do. Lastly, Murphy's worlds of Max and Darnell and Guiding Hope begin to collide.

Murphy finally starts opening up to Max. Meanwhile, Murphy, Max and Darnell step up to help Jess. Lastly, Felix makes an interesting decision.

When Murphy and Felix concoct a new plan to destroy Nia, Murphy's friendship with Josh proves to be more beneficial than she expected. In need of some space from Murphy, Jess makes a bold move with Sterling. Dean runs into issues at work, and Max gets an unexpected visitor.

Murphy and Felix swing for the fences when they attempt to execute the plan to end their arrangement with Nia. Finding himself in dire circumstances, Dean seeks the help of a former colleague. Max does the unthinkable.

With stakes high for everyone, Murphy, Jess, Felix, Max and Dean must each contend with the fallout following an attempt to cut off Nia's supply and take her down.

With Nia's entire shipment missing and the Guiding Hope crew under the gun to deliver it, Murphy, Jess, Felix and Max will stop at nothing to sniff out the stash. In the meantime, Dean has his own plans for the misplaced goods, while Gene visits Darnell and uncovers some shocking information.

With Nia dead and Josh aware of their involvement in the biggest case of his career, Murphy, Jess, Felix and Max are forced to make some life-changing decisions. Meanwhile, Officer Gene Clemens suspects something is awry within the department and forms an unlikely partnership with Josh.

Tensions run high when Murphy's plans hit a bump in the road. Josh's vendetta against Murphy grows with the help of a new friend.

Murphy and Max have a long overdue conversation. Darnell's paranoia turns into fear when everything starts crumbling.

Murphy and Darnell come face to face with the source of their problems and Max and Gene get pulled into the mess. As his condition worsens, Josh's bad blood with Murphy gets the best of him.

Josh's persistence to bring Murphy down motivates everyone to pull a plan together. Murphy asks Felix for a favor and Darnell learns some intriguing information about the team behind Bolt.

Max and Murphy make plans for the future, and everything seems to be going according to plan at the fundraiser with Murphy and Darnell posing as the un-happy couple. Meanwhile, Josh concocts his own plan and inserts himself in the middle of everything.

Murphy copes by distracting herself with a new motivation: getting even. Felix attempts to help her find other ways to deal with her emotions, but like anything with Murphy, it's an uphill battle. Josh is smug as he slowly puts together how the night unfolded, until he realized that it's not over yet.
