Ratings Roundup Week of October 8, 2017

The CW opened its fall season last week, along with a few other scattered premieres left over for other networks. Things started to shake out in week three as rookie shows shed their curiosity ratings and settled into a more regular pattern. As a result, it became more obvious as to which programs were already headed for trouble and which shows will stand the test of another season.

The CW premiered its fall season last week with two new programs, Valor and Dynasty, neither of which lit up the ratings for the network. The big surprise was certainly Riverdale which jumped from a 0.4 where it ended last season to a 0.8 to open this season. If the show can hold on to those kinds of numbers, it will be a long running hit for the network. The Flash picked up right where it left off at the end of last year as did the rest of the superhero line up, none are in any danger. Supernatural just kept doing what it does, and will run for as long as everyone wants to make it; it's also in no danger. Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend started just as low as they ended last season. Neither should have been renewed last year, it will be interesting to see if the network keeps either of them after this year.

FOX was given the gift of an NFL overrun last Sunday which gave the network a healthy bounce for its Sunday night schedule. Ghosted held steady for its second week, The Gifted lost a couple of tenths but is still fine at those numbers. The Orville rose and If it can hold there, it should be fine. Others were not so lucky. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick, and Gotham were all creeping into the danger zone last week. The Exorcist continued to be the lowest rated show for the network and by all rights should be gone at the end of the season if not before.

CBS gave its second rookie series a full season order as SEAL Team was given the green light for another nine episodes this season. Young Sheldon gained a full season order after its opening episode scored such a high rating. CBS had a late premiere with Madam Secretary, which opened slightly higher than where it ended last season. NCIS continued to be the highest rated drama for the Eye and will see another easy renewal, its two spin-offs were reasonably safe as well. 9JKL slipped a bit from its opening, but should be fine, Wisdom of the Crowd and Me, Myself & I dropped again and both are entering the danger zone. MacGyver was probably safe with that 0.8 since it aired on Friday, but Scorpion fans might start to worry a bit. While a 0.8 is acceptable for a Friday, it's not so good for a Monday night program.

ABC's rookie shows were a bit of a mixed bag for the network. While The Good Doctor did phenomenally well, Marvel's Inhumans and Ten Days in the Valley have had poor showings and neither will likely see a full season order. New comedies Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and The Mayor both dropped a couple of tenths from their premieres; The Mayor was still safe, but Kevin (Probably) should start to worry, it can't afford any more slips if it wants to see a full season. Designated Survivor also dropped from where it ended last season and could be headed for trouble if the numbers don't come up.

NBC had another steady week last week, no surprises either way. The Brave held its own, as did Law & Order True Crime. The Blacklist and Great News can't afford any more dips, however. This Is Us and Will & Grace both dropped a couple of tenths over last week, as did The Voice, but still were the top rated programs for the network.
