they will serve a purpose, we see the evolution of the lost symbol guy and the iron fist girl into probably the so-called "ai" and "the grandmother of julliette?". I also have a feeling that they aren't hundreds of years in the silo's but just 2 to 3 generations. That's why the outside is still so bad. 

Best LOST episode since The Incident

Easily the best one of the season, I think slightly better than the premiere.
