This is because of the writers' strike. All shows ran short seasons this year. There were 22 episodes last season and 18 in season 1.

The worst storyline of the show really. 

The dysfunction in this relationship can be quite concerning.

I never watched this show back in the day although I was a fan of John Ritter. I've started watching it 20 years later and it is great. In one way it's really sad to know that his death left too much of a hole in the show for it to really succeed without him but in another way, it feels right.

This episode was well done considering what everyone had to deal with.
