Raised in the town of Crawford, Texas, Hoby Gilman was the son of a lawyer. He went into law himself by becoming a Texas Ranger. He eventually became the acting sheriff of Porter, Texas, after the sheriff there was shot and killed. Hoby worked as both a sheriff and a Ranger, leaving Porter for weeks at a time on Ranger business but always returning.
