Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the youngest of three children, Paul attended the Buckingham Brown & Nichols School, later transferring to the Cambridge School of Weston. He then moved on to Tulane University. There, he earned a Master's degree in English and theatre and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Fraternity. He went on to earn a second master's degree in acting and directing from Boston University.
In addition to acting, Paul also directed the film Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987 and The Cutting Edge in 1992. On stage, Paul has appeared as "Captain Hook" in the Churchill Theatre production of Peter Pan. He recently completed a nine-month tour as "Tevye" in a UK stage production of Fiddler on the Roof. Paul is also a photographer, an artist and a writer. His first book, Chrystallia, has received critical acclaim and he is in the process of penning his second novel.
