Brian Cox is a Scottish actor who works in film, television, and theatre. He has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he gained recognition for portraying King Lear. He currently stars as media magnate Logan Roy on HBO's Succession. Cox appeared in Super Troopers, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, X2, Braveheart, Rushmore, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Troy. He was the first actor to portray Hannibal Lecter on film in 1986's Manhunter.
Winning two Olivier Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award, Cox also received nominations for a British Academy Television Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. He was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 Queen's New Year's Honours List for his services to drama.
In Dundee, Scotland, he was born to Mary Ann Guillerline Cox (maiden surname McCann and a spinner) and Charles McArdle Campbell Cox, a shopkeeper and butcher. His father was of Irish ancestry, and his mother was of Irish and Scottish descent.
