Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, Roscoe Lee Browne attended Lincoln University until 1942, leaving to enlist in the army during WWII. He graduated from Lincoln in 1946, studied French through Middlebury College's summer language program, and went on to receive his masters degree from Columbia University. Returning to Lincoln to teach French and literature, he caught a taste of fame by winning the world championship in the 800-yard dash in 1951.In 1956, with no acting training or experience, he auditioned, and won, a role in Julius Caesar at the newly formed New York Shakespeare Festival. He made his screen debut in the 1961 film The Connection.
Roscoe Lee Brown died of stomach cancer at the age of 84.
