Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Terry Gilliam was raised in Los Angeles. He began his career as an animator and strip cartoonist for Help! magazine. Relocating to England in the 1960s when Help! folded, he jokingly announcing in the final issue that he was "being transferred to the European branch" of the magazine, which did not exist. It was while working as an animator for the children's series Do Not Adjust Your Set that he met Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Plain, who along with John Cleese were collectively known as Monty Python.
