Berlin – 1945
During the last days of World War II,
German soldiers load a fortune in gold into trucks and try to escape
Allied soldiers open fire, killing one driver, but the officer in charge
manages to escape.
Now
Jim picks up his
briefing at a locked car in the parking lot of an amusement park, and is
informed that Hitler organized a secret fortune to be taken out of the
country as Germany fell. The money was to be used to finance a future
Fourth Reich, and the fortune is worth $5 billion in the current market.
Only the four Nazi officers in charge of the project knew where the
cold was hidden, and they have passed the legacy onto their grandsons.
The four grandsons are now going to reclaim the money in Switzerland and
finance a new Fourth Reich in Western Europe, and the IMF must stop
them and find the gold.
At the team briefing, Jim explains that
the conspirators were supposed to recover the gold much sooner but when
ranking Nazi officials were arrested in 1961, the conspirators put
their plans on hold until the next generation. Each grandson was raised
separately from the others so they have never met. The only grandson the
IMF has been able to identify is Paul Von Schau, who recently received a
coded message to fly to Zurich. Von Schau has boasted to his close
friends that the Fourth Reich is under way and they figure that he'll
meet the other three grandsons in Switzerland.
At the Zurich
airport, Max poses as a Swiss Federal Police officer and arrests Von
Schau when he disembarks. Max has him empty his pockets, of their
contents, including a pocket watch, and hand them over. While the others
watch on a closed-circuit TV, Von Schau hesitates to remove one item
and Max relieves him of what turns out to be a postcard of a church.
While Jim interrogates Von Schau, Max takes the belongings to the others
and they try to figure out where the meeting place is. Grant realizes
that the postcard church is in Zurich and that the clock tower indicates
the time. The postcard has today's date, meaning the meeting will take
place in less than an hour.
At the church, the three
grandsons--Ernst Graff, Maximillian Brucker, and Erich Wolfe—each go to
the front, light a candle, and set their postcard done. Nicholas, posing
as Von Schau, comes in and realizes what they've done. He does the same
thing and the four men introduce themselves. Since none of them know
the real Von Schau, Nicholas' impersonation is successful. They go to a
hotel and book a suite, and toast the success of their mission. Graff
insists on trying to take charge, describing how they will use the
fortune to begin their glorious crusade to restore Hitler's dream. He
then reminds them that each grandson was given a set of numbers to
memorize. Once they combine their numbers, they are to present the
completed account number to the Consolidated Trading Bank of Zurich.
Wolfe and Brucker give their numbers, but Nicholas refuses, saying that
his instructions were to wait until they were at the bank. Graff
objects, drawing a gun, but Nicholas calls his bluff, pointing out that
if he's dead then they'll never get his numbers. Graff reminds him that
they'll still need each other even after they have the account number,
but Nicholas stands by his claim and dares him to shut. After a moment,
Graff lowers his gun and complains that Nicholas is making things more
complicated, but Nicholas insists that they need to follow discipline.
Later, Nicholas slips away and meets with Jim and Casey. They have
checked on Graff, who has family holdings in South Africa and is heavily
in debt. He gambles to try and make up the losses, and Jim will create a
fake magazine article pointing out the debt in an attempt to turn Wolfe
and Brucker against their teammate. Jim warns Nicholas that Graff has a
violent temper and carries a gun, facts of which Nicholas is already
well aware. They assure Nicholas that they'll get the account number and
that he should slip away that night so they can get it to him. back at
the hotel, Grant creates a fake ID for Casey as a rich baroness with $18
million.
Later, Casey goes to the bank and meet with the
manager, Alfred Krubler. She offers to move her household funds into his
bank and starts with a $1 million draft. Krubler is glad to take it and
she invites him to dinner, saying that there is someone she wants him
to meet. That night, Jim poses as Casey's doctor and business manager
and meets with Krubler. While they chat in the restaurant, Grant and Max
rig up the IMF's hotel suite with a smoke projector.
When
Nicholas tries to go out, Graff stops him. Nicholas claims that he has a
date and Graff and the others suggests that they dine together.
Realizing that he can't leave, Nicholas says that he'll meet her some
other night when he can be alone with her.
When the sommelier
presents the wine for dinner, Jim distracts him and drugs Krubler's
glass. Krubler quickly falls ill and they take him to the hotel suite.
After administering a hypnogenic to make Krubler more suggestive and
blot out his short-term memory of what has happened, Jim informs Krubler
that he's dying of a stroke. Max poses as a priest and Jim convinces
Krubler to give them the full bank account number. Once Krubler does so,
Jim gives him a final post-hypnotic suggestion to give Graff a message
the next day and then forget that he said anything.
The next
day, Casey poses as a maid and delivers Nicholas's suit. As she cleans
up, she leaves a fresh matchbook in the ashtray. Nicholas realizes what
she's doing and pockets the matchbook, and then leaves for the bank with
the others. Once they're gone, the IMF breaks in and Jim plants the
fake magazine with the article on Graff. Grant finds an electronic
microscope hooked up to a TV screen and reroutes the signal to the IMF
suite.
At the bank, Graff and the others meet with Krubler, who
brings up their account which is in the name of "A. Lois." The three
grandsons present their numbers and Nicholas lights a cigarette from the
matchbook. The numbers are written on the inside cover and he recites
the numbers. However, when Krubler opens the account, he asks them to
wait for a moment and step out. He returns with a deposit box holding a
single envelope and turns it over to them. As the grandsons leave,
Krubler tells Graff that he wishes the news on his coffee investments
was better. Graff has no idea what the manager is talking about and
after a moment, neither does Krubler. As they leave, Nicholas comments
to Wolfe and Bruckner that coffee isn't the only recent investment that
has gone bad for Graff.
Back at the hotel, Graff opens the
envelope and the others are disgusted to see that it only contains a few
worthless Reichmarks. However, Graff tells them that all German
accounts were scrutinized after the war so the Nazis had to be careful.
He removes a microdot from the period in the A. Lois name on the
envelope and magnifies it using the microscope. When magnified, the
microdot reveals one-fifth of a location consisting of four names
surround a fifth two-word name in the center. Graff then takes the
pocket watch crystals from the watches belonging to Wolfe and Bruckner
and adds them to the microdot. Each has another fifth of the location.
Graff adds his crystal and then asks for Nicholas', but Nicholas,
thinking quickly, claims that he's lost it. Graff slaps him and tells
him to find the watch, Nicholas calls Jim, posing as the hotel manager,
and suggests to Wolfe and Bruckner that they should think hard about who
would benefit from stealing the watch.
When Jim arrives, he
proposes a search of the hotel. Graff refuses at first until Jim
suggests that they call the police instead. Eager to avoid the
authorities, Graff agrees to the watch. The grandsons insists that
Nicholas stay with them, and Nicholas slips Jim his watch when he shakes
hands with him. Back in the IMF suite, Grant overlays Nicholas' crystal
over the picture they've captured from the microscope, giving them a
location in Greineau Cemetery. They figure that the four surrounding
names are tombstones and Grant accesses the cemetery's computer records.
He learns that the name in the center belongs to A. Lois, the name from
the envelope. Jim realizes that it's the right mausoleum since the name
of Hitler's father was Alois. Casey stays behind to watch out for the
grandsons while the others go to the cemetery.
As Graff tries
to work out the location from the four-fifths of the location that they
have, Bruckner notices the magazine article that Jim planted earlier. He
questions Graff about his gambling but Wolfe interrupts, calming them
down and insisting that they need to work together.
Jim, Grant, and Max arrive at the cemetery and break into the A. Lois mausoleum. However, the only coffin inside is empty.
Graff finally realizes that they're looking for a cemetery and starts
checking the phone book. Casey calls the others to warn them that Graff
and the others are on their way. Working against time, Jim tries to work
out the significance of the period in "A. Lois" and has Grant push the
period on the mausoleum nameplate. The bottom of the coffin slides away,
