Episode Discussion

When having to sack 65 years of your life as a criteria, you probably won't get the "best" people to sign up either ;-)

@stinky666

The director was sort of trying to mimic the opening shots to Alien, where there was smoking and a chaotic scene with people talking over each other in multiple conversations. The A:E scene was trying to create some tension and chaos in order to contrive a way for Malachite to swallow the infested water but it felt, well, contrived

Yes! I am so glad someone agrees with me, I feel all of the crew are really weak and stupid. And what's with the guy constantly with the cigarette in his hand in EVERY scene? who thought "yeah that'd be cool and not stupid"? I can't even remember the characters name because I was too annoyed at this every time it showed him haha

But I do agree with others, this episode was brilliant and had some nice things unfolding for the story, really looking forward to the other episodes.

Edit:

I just saw in the cast his name is Rahim, why did he have to smoke EVERY scene? I don't get when they do this for people.

a perfect hour of tv, Hawley basically sneak-remade Alien but with a moderate budget

I couldn't agree more, Sanne :-)

Also, if I was the head of Weyland-Yutani and knew what they had when they were still years out in space, I'd send a faster ship to retrieve them and the specimens instead of waiting alllll that time for them to return!

Very nice summary, thanks for that ;-)

So I had to do some reading (I wanted to anyway, to make sense of the time scale differences in ship speeds) but it looks like while they have FTL in the Alien series, the speeds have increased dramatically over the source of the timeline. Going backwards:

In Aliens, the marine ship the USS Saluco could do the trip to LV-426, 39 light years away, in 3 weeks, at around 677x the speed of light.

The Nostromo from Alien could do about 46x the speed of light - its trip to LV-426 took 10 months.

The Prometheus, back in the late 21st century could only do around 15x the speed of light, and the trip to LV-233 (which is a sibling moon to LV-426 around the same gas giant) took over 2 years.

If we extrapolate back to when the Maginot (the ship in Alien: Earth) launched, in 2055, and had a 65 year mission also to LV-426 (we assume? I think this is still unconfirmed) it had a travel time of 32.5 years minimum both ways but we can say 32 years out, 32 years back, and 1 year collecting samples. Meaning, the Maginot goes just barely over light speed.

So the insane trip time make sense given the large advances in FTL technology between the Maginot and the Saluco.

WHY would anyone agree to it? I can only assume that it would basically provide for their families for life (for those that have families back on Earth) plus a bunch of money when they return... you just have to basically sacrifice your life with your friends and family for it. Very techno-dystopian.

Also, if I was the head of Weyland-Yutani and knew what they had when they were still years out in space, I'd send a faster ship to retrieve them and the specimens instead of waiting alllll that time for them to return!
