Intelligent and opinionated with a mouth that's triggered as quickly as her temper, Darby is a passionate, hot-headed, and brave beat cop with the intellect and intuition of an experienced detective. Her father Sam was Darby's whole world, so when he died suddenly in the line of duty, Darby turned inward, feeling isolated and resentful of mom Victoria's detachment – the two of them unable to properly grieve together. When Victoria announced their move to Alder Bluffs, Darby was a teen whose last desire was to be uprooted, and her bitterness towards Victoria grew deeper. After a turbulent time in high school – alleviated only by her best friend Zane and high school crush Lucas – Darby left as soon as she could to enroll in the police academy and follow in her father's footsteps, to Victoria's stark disapproval.
