Stay Together for the Kids!

Stay Together for the Kids! Image #199652And don’t watch Divorce or do..maybe? The first episode was a doozy and I’m not sure if there’s enough there to continue watching the show. Divorce stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Frances a working mom who after a freak near death experience decides to divorce her husband Robert played by Thomas Haden Church. These two are surrounded by a group of people, Diane played by Molly Shannon, her husband Nick, played by Tracy Letts, and Diane, played by Talia Balsam, who don’t seem all that better than the two main characters of the show. You can check out the trailer for this show below.

The most apt comparison for this show is Catastrophe, not only because both shows are written and directed by Sharon Horgan, who also stars in Catastrophe, but both appear to be a unflinching look as to what a marriage looks like. The big difference here is that there is some hope in Catastrophe, granted, in Catastrophe they are just beginning their relationship. But there is a lightness and a loving connection there. In Divorce, there is nothing of the sort. Robert and Frances are surrounded by people who don’t appear to be friends, because of how awful they treat one another, and yet they seem to want to hang out together. Also Jemaine Clement is in the pilot episode as a love interest but instead of being funny, which his appearance would typically be, it just felt off.

Finally, the last reason why I’m not really into this show is because with everything going on today, I need a bit of escapism. Yes, I love my dark realistic shows, but even in them there is some hope. I want Dolores to rise up in Westworld, I want Quarry to figure his life out, and I want Earn and Paper Boi to make it big. I have hope in these characters. I don’t know if I even want to be in the same room as Frances and Robert and I’m not even sure if I want them together or apart and frankly, I don’t really care. So have you check out Divorce? And if so, what did you think?
