Why "Vikings" is the direction that The History Channel should continue in

While finishing finals and coming into the winter slump of television, I've decided to tune back into "Vikings" an original drama from The History Channel.

The History Channel you say? That network that's responsible for Trailer Park Wars and Men With Beards Hitting Things and Getting Mad About It, fyi neither of these are actual shows but could very well be if The History Channel continues on the path it is on. Yes, The History Channel a channel with "History" in the name but shows anything but it. However, that appears to have changed with "Vikings" and it's as is someone at THC decided maybe, I don't know, let's not pander to the lowest common denominator and make a show with some story line, some drama, and not just this God awful reality television junk that seems to clog the airwaves.

"Vikings" tells the story of well Vikings. Which is fantastic because A it's history and B it's awesome. Who doesn't like vikings? They were fairly progressive, they were maniacal warriors, and they did as they pleased. Seeing as we are not getting pillaged by vikings anytime soon, I think it's safe to say that this show will continue to do well. And with the millions of viewers that break HBO Go anytime an episode of Game of Thrones preimers, it's safe to say that a show that contains sex, cunning, and violence will do quite well.

"Vikings" tells the story Ragnar Lothbrok, Travis Fimmel, as he leads his viking countrymen to England on their first ever sacking and pillaging. It's not just a story about Ragnar and his awesome axe wielding skills, it also includes his awful brother Rollo, played by Clive Staden, who is just the cliche younger brother that can't get over the awesome-ness that is Ragnar, I mean it says it all in his name doesn't it, Lagertha, Ragnar's wife and shield maiden, played by Katheryn Winnick, who kicks some major ass, Floki, a soothsayer and all around crazy person played by Gustaf Skarsgard, of the Skarsgard acting family of course, and Athelstan an abducted priest who confronts the viking way against his christian upbringing, played by George Blagden. This cast is just the iceberg, and I'm only on season 2 episode 4, so there are many characters that I haven't included because I don't know about them, but it is an immense cast.

The whole reason I'm writing this though is because this show should be supported because THC could continue in this direction. They could cover the Mayans, they could cover, pirates, they could cover Mongolians, they could cover the Moors. They could cover so much, portraying history while also creating original content and this is the type of content that this channel should be producing, not Angry Guys with Guns, or Flower Pot Wars, again, not actual shows but they totally could be.

I'm asking, nay begging, that if you have some free time during the winter, binge this show. It's on Hulu and amazon Prime, so if you have either of those apps, then watch it. It's not only a great show, it's a fantastic show to support.

History Channel still has a way to go to live up to the "History" part of its name.

I will take historical fiction any time over "reality" shows.

p.s.: a lot of "reality" shows are scripted, kind-off. ;)

We have watched this from the beginning and you are absolutely spot on with your commentary.

And the nonhistorical reality crap needs to GO now.
