Many of my favorite shows received an award this year, Gina Rodriguez, who gave a profoundly sincere acceptance speech for her role as Jane in Jane the Virgin and Kevin Spacey for his role as Francis Underwood in House of Cards, but a few shows that I have not been watching also garnered some awards and my attention.
The Affair took home a few Golden Globes, one for Best Television Series over The Good Wife, House of Cards, and Game of Thrones, all great contenders, and another for Best Actress in a television series, for Ruth Wilson as Alison Bailey. From the IMDB page the plot sounds simple, it's based around an affair between a married woman and a teacher, however, from what I gathered from the awards there is much more to this show. Also, I really will support anything with Dominick West in it, who had the role of McNulty on The Wire.
Jeffrey Tambor took home a globe for his role as the protagonist in Transparent in which he plays Maura Pfefferman an individual, from my understanding, who is a man but wishes to become a woman. The show follows the family as it deals with this decision and attempts to understand their father's wishes. I attempted to watch this show and will give it another shot, however, I did not like it. It appeared to be too artsy to me. It didn't seem funny and I felt like it was trying too hard to be, I don't know, hipster-esque. The film was grainy, I think there were multiple shots with a nice shaky handheld, and it seemed awkwardly unscripted. But I may give this show another shot.
Maggie Gyllenhaal took home the globe for her role in The Honorable Woman a story surrounding a woman who finds herself caught up within the Israeli Palestinian crisis. I have heard fantastic things about this show and plan to watch it on Netflix.
Fargo took home two awards last night, one for Billy Bob Thorton for Best Performance by an Actor and one for Best Mini-Series. Fargo is loosely based off of the movie of the same name but features some new characters and a different plot. I've heard spectacular things about this show and without a doubt, I will, most likely, begin watching it tonight.
So, if you, like me, saw a few shows last night that you've never seen/never heard of/didn't know anything about, check them out and let me know what you think.
