Clare Somersby is a doctor working with an aid organisation in northern Africa and the estranged daughter of Gerard Crawford. She is kidnapped by Janjaweed fighters, prompting Section 20 to launch a rescue attempt to secure her father's co-operation. Her rescue is complicated by her insistence that Stonebridge and Section 20 refrain from violence even when faced with mortal peril. Claire later breaks down under the stress of their situation, admitting that her entire life has been defined by a desire to prove that she is different from her father.
