She was best friends with Geum Sa-weol at the orphanage they both grew up in but they later become bitter rivals. When she does not get her way, she will immediately cry to engender compassion and pity. She was weak as a young girl and so the orphanage direction paid more attention to her. Deuk-ye mistakenly believed that Hye-sang was the daughter she abandoned at the orphanage so she paid for her to study abroad and kept an eye on her career.
Just one day before the orphanage building collapse, she found out that the orphanage director was actually her dad and that Sa-weol's mother was very rich.
