Sam Callaghan

Sam Callaghan lives on the second floor of an old shophouse in a street off Serangoon Road. The shophouse owner, 'Uncle' Wang, helped out Sam and his mother when they were in Changi Prison during WW2, when the young boy would sneak under the wire to get food and basic medicines.
Sam isn't interested in being part of the ex-pat community, with their servants and their membership of the Singapore Cricket Club. He knows he'll always be an outsider, and when the demons become too persuasive, he succumbs to the occasional bender or a trip to the opium den.
