An only child growing up in Glasgow, Carne suffered an unhappy childhood. Aged sixteen, his father told him he'd done his best – the rest was up to Carne. Carne left for London and started over. Needing structure and purpose, he joined the police. His gut instinct and all-consuming style of policing led him to swift promotion and after ten years in the Met he transferred to Bristol. It was here he joined a partnership with DS Merchant. While his career really matters to him, Carne's very far from squeaky clean.
With Ivy's return, Carne's instinct to protect her will consume him.
