The legendary "Robin Hood of the Range", Ben carefully promotes his image as a robber who takes from the rich to give to the poor. Even if a good chunk of the money makes it into his pockets. He's also careful never to kill anyone. After serving a stretch in prison, Ben is in his 50s when he gets out. He puts together his former gang of equally-aged men and comes up with a plan to rob the bank in Porter. They conduct a practice run in a neighboring town, which catches the sheriff's attention even though they don't steal any money.
In Porter, Ben pretends to be a blacksmith looking to start up a business. This gets him into the bank where he can check the floorplan, and into the sheriff's office where he takes stock of Hoby's guns. The robbery goes as planned after Ben sends one of his men into the sheriff's office posing as a drunk. the man gets the drop on Hoby and three visiting sheriffs. Hoby captures the man and traps Ben in the bank. Rather than risk his reputation, Ben lets a hostage teller go and then charges out into a hail of gunfire to die on his feet. Ben's reputation intact, children still play "Sheriff and Ben Moss" and fight over which one can be Ben.
