A cop turned insurance adjuster, Don secretly worked with diamond broker Fahrid Nasser. Fahrid would engineer diamond theft (actually inside jobs) with boutique owners. They'd collect the insurance, and pay Fahrid for the "cleaned" diamonds with the identify serial numbers removed. Don looked the other way, making sure Fahrid and the owners were never suspect, while he signed off on the insurance payments. Fahrid got greedy and Don killed him, and was subsequently killed by Maze when he used Ella's brother Jay as a hostage.
