However, the threat of contracting AIDS and Hepatitis C through blood products proves to be a new challenge. Ryan suffers the plight of many hemophiliac children of the era - prejudice and ignorance on a social level and a frightening awareness of his mortality that no child should ever know at the age of ten. As he grows, we watch him struggle with his illness and the treatments to fight the infection.
