A hulking and stoic samurai, Toda Hirokatsu, is known by his nickname, Buntaro. He is ruthlessly loyal to his lord and only suffers a single weakness: his jealous possession of his wife, Mariko.
As a fighter of great renown, Buntaro's exploits are legendary. He first gained notoriety as a master archer in the invasion of Korea, becoming a favorite of the late Taikō. Despite being a celebrated military hero, Buntaro struggles with his interpersonal relationships. As the only son of the respected general, Hiromatsu, he strives for his father's approval, but their relationship remains cold.
Like all marriages of the time, his union was political and organized by his father. Buntaro did not expect to fall so completely in love with his young wife, to the point of vulnerability.
