Takada: Community and Tradition in Snow Country

Joetsu City in Niigata Prefecture is famous for its harsh winters and heavy snowfalls. Since the Edo period (1603-1868), people here have built covered arcades known as gangi along their streets. One place that's famous for these gangi is Takada.
