An experiment to use a human brain to control and direct a future flight to another world is undertaken for a developing space project. Colonel Barham, who has been gravely crippled in the past and is dying of a disease, volunteers for the project to his brain as a merging of human and machine. However things go awry as unexpected consequences of the project occur.

At a military base, a team of officers and scientists look on as Colonel Alec Barham. Rahm feeds data into a computer. When the lead scientist, Dr. Leo Hausner, changes the data by one symbol, the computer locks up. Rahm reports that there was a malfunction and he had to improvise, and complains that the equipment is faulty. He leaves in his wheelchair, and General Daniel Pettit apologies for Alec's actions.
