The circus arrives in the off-season at the request of Hayfield's reverend. However, the president of the town council forbids circus people from coming into town after dark, and threatens to shut down the Christmas celebration for the poor children.

In the town of Hayfield, Joey and Corky go to the general store and admire the Christmas decoration to shop for presents. The owner, Toomis Flager, chats with Joey and an alarm clock goes off.
