A former San Francisco police detective suffering from an extreme case of obsessive-compulsive disorder is called in to investigate an apparent assassination attempt of a mayoral candidate in which one of his bodyguards is killed.

Adrian Monk and his nurse, Sharona Fleming, are examining a crime scene as the officers and detectives look on. Monk worries that he left the stove on at home, and Sharona assures him that he didn't. Once Monk concentrates on the murder victim --Nicole Vasques--on the floor, Monk tells her that it wasn't a burglary gone sour.
