Escape artist Harry Houdini and mystery writer Arthur Conan Doyle meet when a nun is killed in a locked room under mysterious circumstances. A witness reports a ghost, but Harry is skeptical while Arthur sets out to prove the supernatural does exist. Assisting them is Adelaide Stratton, Scotland Yard's first female officer, who is assigned to the men to keep her out of the way.

Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle are trapped beneath a grate and the sewer drain that they're in fills with river water. As Harry tries to reach the lock on the top of the grate, Arthur lights a match and they bicker over who will die first.
