Riley Jones was born and raised in Gateshead, England and carried a heavy interest in drama from a young age. He studied acting and performance at Northumbria University before landing a role in the national tour of Lee Hall's The Pitmen Painters in 2013. Riley had a small role as a front desk officer in an episode of family fantasy television series Wolfblood before starring as Nick in the 2014 short film, Run. In addition to his police role on Vera, Riley previously appeared as PC Danny Jones in 2018 documentary To Catch a Serial Killer with Trevor McDonald.
