Born in New York City, Teresa Wright quickly made her mark in Hollywood, winning Academy Award nominations for her first three films: 1941's The Little Foxes (in which she played Bette Davis' daughter) and 1942's The Pride of the Yankees (as Lou Gehrig's wife) and in Mrs. Miniver (the plucky young woman who marries the son of Greer Garson's Mrs. Miniver). Nearly all of her most memorable cinematic roles came during the war period. After almost a decade away from films, she came back to play the touching role Miss Birdie, elderly landlady, opposite Matt Damon in her last picture, John Grisham's The Rainmaker (1997).
