David J. Garrow is an American historian and author of the book "Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama" (2017). He also wrote "Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference" (1986), which won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Biography, "Liberty and Sexuality" (1994), and other works.
Garrow was Professor of Law & History at the University of Pittsburgh until 2017, previously he was Senior Research Fellow at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. He has taught at Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the City University of New York, the College of William and Mary, American University, and Emory University. Garrow graduated magna cum laude from Wesleyan University in 1975, and received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1981.
