Robert Newton

Robert Guy Newton, born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England, was a stage, film and television actor. Newton is best remembered for his pirate roles as Long John Silver in Treasure Island (1950), Long John Silver (1954) and the TV series The Adventures of Long John Silver (1957) as well as Blackbeard in Blackbeard the Pirate (1952). He exaggerated his Dorset, West Country accent which has been credited with popularizing the stereotypical "pirate voice" which in turn lead to Newton becoming the "patron saint" of the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th).
