Jon Henderson

Dr. Jon C. Henderson is an associate professor at the Underwater Archaeology Research Center at the University of Nottingham. He is an underwater archaeologist with specific research interests in submerged prehistoric settlements. Dr. Henderson has extensive experience of underwater operations involving monitoring, survey and excavation with a particular expertise in the study of freshwater lake dwellings. Dr. Henderson has supervised and directed underwater projects in the UK, Poland, Greece and Malaysia. His research on the investigation and excavation of lake dwellings in Scotland, funded by Historic Scotland, led to the formation of the Underwater Archaeology Research Centre at the University in 2004. He currently serves as the British Director of the Pavlopetri Underwater Archaeology Project, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and is a Member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists.

Dr Jon Henderson is an archaeologist with a focus on the potential of coastal and marine heritage to lead research that addresses the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He has specific research interests in coastal societies, submerged settlements, underwater archaeology and the development of innovative digital techniques for the survey and presentation of underwater cultural heritage. He is the Director of the Underwater Archaeology Research Centre and a Chancellor's Fellow in Global Challenges at the University of Edinburgh. He has directed projects in the UK, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Jamaica and China. He is currently leading a Newton Fund project in Egypt called Presence in the Past which aims to utilise Egyptian marine cultural heritage in an educational and public setting using 3D VR technologies. Recently Jon was part of the UNESCO delegation at the United Nations Ocean Conference supporting the implementation of SDG 14 ‘Life Below Water' where he presented on the role marine cultural heritage can play in the sustainable development of the oceans.
