In London, Constantine wakes up from a dream of the world and a female voice whispering "queen of angels". Constantine wakes up and realizes that something is moving in his apartment. Miniature demons of himself leap at him, an d he grabs one and stomps on it. The others attack, biting him, and they say that they're projections of his unconscious: his inner demons given form. Constantine chants a spell, taking them back in to stop them. The projections dissipate into mist and drift back into Constantine's body.
Constantine realizes that something opened a gateway between his unconscious and conscious minds, just as his friend Chas Chandler knocks on the door. They go to a pub and Chas admits that he and his wife Renee have been separated for seven months. He explains that he's been in a dark place for the last few years and pushed Renee away, thought he was past what happened. Constantine wonders why Chas is there, and Chas says that his world has gone dark since Renee kicked him out. The only decent thing he's been able to hold on to is his 8-year-old daughter, Trish. Now she's in a coma, and the doctors don't know what caused it or how to cure it. Chas figures that dark magic is involved, and drives Constantine to the hospital to have him take a look at Trish.
