Whit Brewer, a charming con man, resorts to murder when his elaborate real-estate swindle is uncovered by a former college professor, in “A Gathering of Thieves” on the third-season premiere of “Barnaby Jones” in a new time period, Tuesday (10-11 p.m:) on the CBS television network.
In the premiere episode, Barnaby is hired by the professor’s daughter to investigate her father’s supposed accidental auto death, which leads Barnaby to two ladies who are rivals for the affection of Brewer, played by guest star Robert Foxworth.
THE FIRST is Brewer’s assistant {Laraine Stephens), who confirms Brewer’s story that the professor had been drinking before the ‘“‘accident,” and the other is a local bank official (Tyne Daly) who has collaborated in Brewer’s property swindle.
Barnaby’s deceptively folksy manner masks a wide knowledge of criminalistics and human nature. EMPLOYING his own crime laboratory, he uses the forensic sciences and his own brand of psychology to conclude his case sucessfully.
