The Love Boat - Episode Guide

In "The Captain and the Lady," Bonnie Franklin appears as Capt. Stubing's infuriatingly sarcastic ex-wife who creates havoc aboard the Pacific Princess when she arrives for a cruise with her present spouse (Robert Symonds), the captain's boss. "One If By Land" stars Jimmie Walker and Brenda Sykes as a couple who have been living together in unwedded bliss, until the young lady decides that matrimony is a "must". To forget her unhitchable man, she escapes aboard the luxury ship where she befriends fun-loving Suzanne Somers, who helps her acquire a new outlook on life. "Centerfold" finds Ms. Meredith Baxter-Birney as a girl who once posed in the nude for a photographer. Now engaged to a political candidate (Shelly Novack), she is horrified to learn that the picture is the centerfold of a current magazine. She sets out to recover all copies aboard ship before her future husband sees the centerfold picture.

In "Oh, Dale!," John Ritter plays a rejected suitor hot on the trail of the girl he loves, who happens to be a heartless fortune-seeker named Joann (Jennifer Shaw). When Joann boards ship to be with wealthy Peter Pringle (Mark Thomas), Dale (John Ritter) is forced to masquerade as a woman because the only cabin available on ship must be shared with Susan (Tovah Feldshuh). Matters are complicated when Dale, in drag, catches the Captain's eye. In "The Main Event," Maurice and Stella Marshall (Sherman Hemsley and LaWanda Page) attempt to salvage their stormy 23 year marriage by taking a second honeymoon. Enroute to dinner with the Captain, they get stuck in the ship's elevator and rediscover each other. "A Tasteful Affair" stars Jaclyn Smith as Jeanette Brad ford, a neglected young wife on a solitary cruise, tailed by a handsome private eye, Dennis Kingsley (Dennis Cole). But detective Dennis has trouble arranging professional and emotional priorities when he falls for the lady whose husband has hired him to catch Jeanette in a compromising situation.

In "Ex Plus Y," newlyweds Terri and Ron Larson (Loretta "M*A*S*H" Swit and Richard "Soap" Mulligan) are adjusting well until Terri encounters ex-husband Barney (Robert Reed) aboard ship with his lady friend. "Graham and Kelly" is about a 13-year-old girl (Kristy McNichol of "Family") and boy (Scott Baio) who feel love for the first time, face its hardships, then see it blossom. Cruise director Julie McCoy is attracted to handsome Die young Jim Wright (Charles Frank) who is conducting a Life Begins-at-Sixty tour in "The Goldenagers." But the active senior citizens leave Jim little time for romance.

In "Message for Maureen," a famous female tennis pro (Brenda Benet) confined to a wheelchair as the result of a serious accident, finds herself in a relationship with a sports writer (Bili Bixby) who was once her severest critic. Charo plays a stagestruck Mexican stowaway who boards ship in Acapulco and creates havoc until Capt. Stubing (MacLeod) agrees to let her perform for the passengers in "The Acapulco Connection." "Gotcha" stars Milton Berle as a practical joker who pulls one joke too many. Audra Lindley plays his long-suffering wife.

In "Help, Murder," Denise and Bret (Michele Lee and David Groh) are a married couple getting away from their three kids for the first time. When Bret and cruise director Julie McCoy get together to plan a surprise birthday party, Denise gets the notion her husband is playing around and planning to dump her at sea. James Sheldon directed the script by Ben Joelson and Art Baer. Isaac (Ted Lange), the bartender, falls head-over-heels in love with Roxie Blue (Diahann Carroll), a glamorous star traveling incognito in "Isaac the Groupie." Roxie and Isaac have a good thing going until the sophisticated lady realizes the relationship is much more than a casual affair.

In "The Joker is Mild," has-been comedian Barry Keyes (Phil Foster) abuses his family tie with cruise director Julie in an astonishing attempt to make a comeback. Richard Kinon directed the script by David Ketchum and Tony Di Marco. Academy Award-winner Ruth Gordon plays Mrs. Warner, a lovable but pushy grandmother who wants to find a husband for her attractive granddaughter, Shirlee (Patty Duke Astin). Granny decides that Doc would be perfect for Shirl, but the young woman becomes smitten with Dave (Tab Hunter), a school teacher. Barry Blitzer wrote the script and Richard Kinon directed. In "First Time Out," Danny (Robert "Welcome Back, Kotter" Hegyes) has had virtually no experience with women, and his fraternity brothers (W.K. Stratton, John Mark Robinson and Meegan King) are determined to arrange a romantic liaison. But Danny meets Barbara (Maureen McCormick) and nature takes its course.

In "Identical Problem," twins Helen and Ellen (both played by Diana "Soap" Canova) pretend to be one person, which nearly drives Doc crazy because Helen is warm, Ellen is cold and Doc is feeling amorous. The script was written by David Ketchum and Tony DiMarco and directed by Don Weis. David Hedison is "Julie's old Flame," a guy the pretty cruise director loved until she discovered he was married. Michael Norell wrote the script; Don Weis directed. Ray Bolger and Harriet Nelson are Horace and Henrietta MacDonald, an elderly couple celebrating an anniversary aboard the Pacific Princess in "The Jinx." When Horace reveals that the ship on which they were wed sunk right after the ceremony, the Princess crew is amused. But after a few mishaps involving the MacDonalds, Capt. Stubing and the rest of the crew have reason to be superstitious.

"The Understudy," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer, is all about Connie Evans (Jo Anne Harris), a seemingly forthright young lady who has signed on as a cruise director trainee, assisting Julie McCoy. Winning the favor of Capt. Stubing, Connie undermines Julie and nearly gets her job. In "Married Singles," Steve Allen and Polly Bergen are Durwood and Maisie, a married couple trying to have fun pretending they don't know each other. Ray Jessel wrote the script. In "Lost and Found, " Sandy Duncan and Jim Stafford play Sharon and Richard Baker, a young couple whose only child has died. During their voyage, they find new happiness through a runaway child, played by James Bond III.

Retired sea Capt. Merrill Stubing Sr. (Phil Silvers) boards the Pacific Princess and makes life miserable for his son, Stubing Jr. in "The Captain's Captain." Veteran come-dienne Judy Canova, mother of Diana Canova of "Soap," plays the lady who takes the elder Stubing's mind off the sea. Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel wrote the script. Gary Burghoff (Radar in "M*A*S*H") is a dog-shy passenger trapped in his cabin by a slightly confused, over-trained German Shepherd dog in "A Dog's Life." David Ketchum and Tony DiMarco wrote this segment. David Landsberg and Vince Baggetta are the unwitting "victims" in a naughty game being played by a trio of eager lovelies (Jane Curtin, Susan Heldfond and Joanna Kerns) in "Romance Roulette," written by Howard Albrecht and Sol Weinstein.

Beverly Blanchard (Eva Gabor) and husband Russ (Leslie Nielsen) plan a few days at sea alone, but the glamorous scribe iis recognized quickly by advice-hungry passengers in "Dear Beverly." The script was written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer. An arrogant chef (Al Molinaro) comes aboard as a replace ment and nearly drives Capt. Stubing mad in "The Strike," written by Mark Fink. Gail and Jeff Smith (Pamela Franklin and Bob Urich) remain in love, though their marriage supposedly has ended. Neither realizes the other is on board, and Jeff doesn't know Gail is expecting in "Special Delivery." Marion Freeman wrote the script.

In "Lonely at the Top," Dick Sargent guests as Father Mike, an outspoken clergyman who comes aboard with six orphaned kids for a Christmas cruise financed by an unknown benefactor. When Mike detects a touch of Scrooge in Capt. Stubing's manner, he takes some very positive action which results in smooth sailing for all. Gordon and Lynne Farr wrote the script. Audrey and Paul Baynes (Florence Henderson and Shecky Greene) are an unhappily married couple, pretending to be compatible until they discover they are lucky to have each other in "Divorce Me, Please," written by Bruce Howard. In "Silent Night," Lila and Dan Barton (Donna Mills and John Gavin) seek to redirect their lives. Dan has served three years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Aboard the Pacific Princess, Dan faces Walter Perry (Dean Santoro), the man he holds responsible. Ben Joelson and Art Baer wrote the script.

Old Franklyn Bootherstone (Will Geer) discovers he knows more about the younger generation than he thought when teenage runaway Nancy Brown (Bayn Johnson) decides to "crash" in his cabin in "The old Man and the Runaway." Howard Albrecht and Sol Weinstein wrote the script and Stu Margolin directed. In "A Fine Romance," Julie is thrilled when Sean McGlynn (Anson Williams) - the object of her girlhood fantasies - comes aboard for a cruise. But neither Julie nor Sean's cabin mate, Mickey O'Day (Tom Poston), are aware that Sean is a priest, out of "uniform" during vacation. The script by Jack Hanrahan and Don Sherman was directed by Stu Margolin. Arte Johnson and Pat Morita are two dingbat painters who are still working on the skipper's cabin when the Pacific Princess goes to sea in "The Painters," written by Ray Jessel and directed by Jim Sheldon.

As Wendy and Sam Bradly (Dori Brenner and Robert Rayes) board ship, Wendy laments the loss of the father she scarcely remembers. Believing her departed dad was a noble sea captain, Wendy forms an attachment for a devilish old purser named Teddy (Bob Crane), who is very busy trying to keep his girlfriend, Ginger (Victoria Carroll), aboard ship. The script for "Family Reunion" was written by Bruce Shelly and directed by Richard Kinon. In "Too Hot to Handle," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer, and also directed by Richard Kinon, George and Sally (John Rubinstein and Kathy Bates) are prevented by dislocated backs, sunburn and even poison ivy from enjoying the personal pleasures of their honeymoon. Checkout clerk Bill Edwards and his wife, Doreen (Bruce Solomon and Judy Luciano Adams), are overwhelmed by the fuss made over them by the Loudons (Don Defore and Rosemary De Camp) and a man named Beatty (David White) in "Cinderella Story," written by Bruce Shelly. James Sheldon directed.

In "Isaac's Double Standard," Millie Washington (Pearl Bailey) takes a cruise to be near her son, Isaac. When Isaac's lady friend, Charlene (Tracey Reed), comes aboard, Millie becomes a very possessive mama. Sue Masters and John Walsh wrote the script. In "One More Time," Mitzy and Lenny (Nanette Fabray and Don Adams) are a once-married (to each other) couple, pro fessionally reunited to entertain the passengers. Hard-boiled and caustic, they are too busy making with the jokes to admit they miss each other. Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel wrote the script. Gopher is on the brink of a fine romance with a girl named Anne (Kim Lankford) in "Chimpanzeeshines," when a jewel stealing monkey named Louise rips off Anne's mother, played by Allyn Ann McLerie. Bernie Kahn wrote the script.

Of course Roz has brought along her $1 million diamond, which a group of thieves (John Schuck, Harold Gould, Larry Storch and Karen Valentine) intend to steal in "The Caper," written by Gordon and Lynne Farr, and Ben Joelson. and Art Baer. In "The Eyes of Love," Jenny Lang (Stephanie Zimbalist) and Steve Hollis (Desi Arnaz Jr.) meet for the first time since they were students at a school for blind children. Now, as young adults, the two fall in love, but Steve does not tell the unsighted Jenny he now can see. Tony Webster wrote the script. Juliet Mills and Dan Rowan play Barbara and Alan Danver, who become friendly with Cathy Randall (Adrienne Barbeau), in "Masquerade." John Whitcomb (Dick Van Patten), a congressman unjustly accused of being involved in a scandal, seeks refuge aboard the Pacific Princess in "The Congressman Was Indiscreet," written by Jack Matcha. During the cruise, Whitcomb befriends Robin Brant (Vicki Lawrence), a clever, attractive reporter for a tabloid newspaper. In "Isaac's History Lesson," Vernee Watson plays Stephanie Hayden, a lovely intellectual snob who is at odds with Isaac over a wonderfully colorful old passenger named Mr. Gibson (Scatman Crothers). Stephanie feels that Mr. Gibson sets "a bad example." Series regulars Bernie Kopell and Fred Grandy wrote the script. Maureen McCormick plays a beauty pageant contestant whose chances of winning are jeopardized by the presence of her possessive boyfriend, played by Bobby Sherman, in "Winner Take Love," written by Kevin Hartigan and David Garber. Graham Jarvis portrays the beauty contest chaperon, Waldo.

Capt. Stubing announces that his nephew, Courtney (Peter Isacksen), will be joining the cruise. The captain tells purser Gopher Smith, Doc Bricker, cruise director Julie McCoy and bartender Isaac that Courtney is "a typical Stubing," that he will soon enter Annapolis and that the crew is under orders to work with the young man, who turns out to be a gangly klutz in need of help. "The Last of the Stubings" was written by Michael Norell. In "The Million Dollar Man," written by Steve Pritzker, embezzler Bill Thompson (Frank Converse) is strongly attracted to the lovely Stephanie Lewis (Marcia Strassman) from the moment he first spots her. Stephanie is equally interested in Bill because she's an undercover cop assigned to the case. Noreen Badger (Pat Crowley), an attractive spinster, and her widowed sister Rose (Marion Ross) had planned a nice, quiet visit at sea in "The Sisters." When Noreen becomes involved with passenger Clark Tyler (Brett Halsey), Rose resents it. Ray Jessel wrote the script. All episodes were directed by Jack Arnold.

In "The Inspector," Capt. Stubing, Doc Bricker, cruise director Julie McCoy, Isaac, the bartender, and the purser, Gopher, feel edgy when they hear that an efficiency expert, hired by the ship's owners, is watching their every move while posing as a passenger. Suspects include a note-taking fuddy duddy named Waterman (Jim Backus), little Mrs. Corwin (Patti MacLeod), who appears to be permanently confused, and Mr. Zidresczky (Jack Bernardi), who wanders around the ship asking the same question in a language no one understands. The script was written by Bruce Howard. Jane (Debralee Scott) is plain, but her friend, Melanie (Laurette Spang), is lovely. Mike (Bob Seagren), the best looking guy aboard, latches on to Melanie while his shy pal, Doug (Sal Viscuso), and Jane quietly take the love boat to paradise, in "A Very Special Girl," scripted by Jerry Winnick. Handsome, middle-aged Brian Sherwood (Paul Burke) and pretty young SarahLambert (Susan Blanchard) cherish every moment they spend together, but the loving relationship is not what it appears to be in "Until the Last Goodbye." Ben Joelson and Art Baer wrote the script. Roger Buchowny directed all episodes.

A slick computer matchmaker proceeds to pair up cruise guests while setting himself up with Julie; two American gold-diggers pretend to be French; a New York advertising executive meets up with a long-lost love.

In "Taking Sides,"scripted by Hugh Wedlock, Jr., Ellen and Scott Desmond (Diana Canova and Bob Urich), and Gladys and Max Watkins (Audrey Meadows and Robert Mandan) play couples who seemingly have one thing in common: their "testy" marriages. Wendel and Ida Snead (Harry Morgan and Priscilla Morrill) are a pleasant older couple en route to Mexico for a visit with their grandchildren. Unbeknown to Ida, Wendel is paying for the expensive trip by cheating at cards in "A Friendly Little Game," written by Ray Brenner. Sheila Lawrence (Georgia Engel) has been sent to sea by her protective papa (Herb Voland), who has asked Doc Bricker to guard the young woman's virtue. But soon after the ship leaves the shore, Sheila is off and running into the arms of Howard Wilson (Harvey Jason), who is unable to operate without a lover's manual in "Going by the Book," written by Jerry Winnick.

In "Parents Know Best," Phyllis and Harry Morrison : (Janis Paige and Monty Hall) take their 22-year-old son, Bruce (Mark Shera), on a cruise, seeking to end his relationship with Diana Lane (Laurie Prange), who is aboard for reasons of her own. Fred S. Fox and Seaman Jacobs wrote the script. Dan Michaels (Leslie Nielsen) and Laura Wakefield (Lynda Day George) plan to marry when the ship docks at Cabo San Lucas. Dan is pushing 50. Laura is much younger. During the cruise, Laura becomes friendly with a young man named Gary (Craig Littler) and Dan enjoys the company of Glenda Fairbanks (Marla Adams), a lady closer to his age. With a little help from Capt. Stubing, Dan and Laura get an unexpected lesson in true love in "A Selfless Love," written by Phil Foster and Marion Zola. Dawn Delaney (Elaine Joyce) is a shapely ex-showgirl who happens to be a registered nurse reporting for duty with a year of pre-med training in "The Nubile Nurse." Doc can only think of Dawn in Las Vegas, but this RN is full of surprises. Barry Blitzer wrote the script.

A young bachelor (Paul Williams) must marry within the 7 week in order to claim a $3 million inheritance; a drab widow (Michele Lee) from the San Fernando Valley poses as a glamorous adventuress and captures the heart of the Captain; a confirmed male chauvinist (Dick Gautier) angers his fiancee (Barbara Rhoades), who finds comfort in sick bay with the ship's doctor; and a scandal sheet reporter (Marcia Wallace) sets out to compile material for a sins-at-sea story.

A young female passenger encourages Gopher to be his own person and stand up for himself to Captain Stubing. However, neither were expecting the consequences of their actions. Also left aboard is a beautiful young woman (Ms. Mills) trying to confront her natural mother (Ms. Day), who gave her up for adoption, and the woman's soap opera star son (Birney), who is falling in love with the daughter in "The Search," written by Lee Aronsohn. James Coco is cast as an author of morally uplifting pamphlets and Dody Goodman as a prim censor who fall passionately in love during deck encounters but are unaware that they are cabinmates in "Who's Who" written by Bob Fraser and Rob Dames. Melissa Gilbert plays a young teen tomboy until she shares a tentative first kiss with an equally inexperienced 13-year-old pal played by Jimmy Baio of ABC's "Soap." Marla Adams and Edward Winter are seen as his parents and Ellen Travolta as the girl's mother in "Rocky," written by Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel.

"A Different Girl" Captain Stubbing's god son is taking a cruise with his wife, whom he married two years ago but his military duty kept him away. "Oh, My Aching Brother" And two brothers who stage false injuries, so that they can sue the insurance company, have targeted the cruise line. 

In "Julie's Aunt," written by Barry Blitzer, Red Buttons portrays Capt. Stubing's Uncle Cyrus, who takes a shine to Julie and uses every trick in his devious mind to get Julie alone. Julie finally gets an assist from a surprising Aunt Phoebe. In "The Big Deal," written by James F. Henry, Mackenzie Phillips plays the daughter of a desperate businessman (Allen Ludden) who selfishly lets her jeopardize her romance with the bandleader (Erik Estrada) to entice another businessman (Sam Groom) into signing a merger. "Where Is it Written?," by Lan O'Kun, has Hope Lange portraying the neglected wife of a publisher (Gene Barry). She succumbs to the romantic advances of novelist Mark Little john (Richard Mulligan) who is on the cruise, hoping it will give him the inspiration for the final chapter of his book.

A shy young man becomes a completely different person at night; a businessman who doesn't have time for his family learns a valuable lesson; a man who believes his chances of survival are better at sea than as a witness in a gangland trial receives loving sympathy from a fellow passenger.

In "Ship of Ghouls," The Amazing Alonzo (Price) fears that he is losing his power to mass-hypnotize audiences, a fact known only to his supportive fiancee, Ramona (Miss Blondell). Hurt when Alonzo keeps their relationship a secret in order to bolster his ego by dazzling a trio of lady passengers (Iris Adrian, Jane Kean and Bibi Osterwald), she turns to Capt. Stubing. Meanwhile, Bobby (Aiken), the son of the Dillers (Gary Collins and his actress-wife Mary Ann Mobley), already has alienated the daughter of Mrs. Moss (Maureen Reagan) and others with his lies. Then during the costume ball at which Alonzo is to entertain, Bobby is the only one to see Karen, the model, at a time when she desperately needs help. Larry Gelman guest stars as Harvey and Colleen Davis plays Lucy. Roger Duchowny directed the teleplay by Mickey Rose.

In "Accidental Cruise," written by Steve Hattman and Dave Hackel, the executive and his secretary come aboard a bit tipsy, are mistaken for another couple and assigned the honeymoon suite. In "The Song Is Ended," written by Lan O'Kun, a famous songwriter who lost his girl to his long-ago partner is instrumental in making the woman see her husband in a new light through his music. In "A Time for Everything," written by Lee Aronsohn, when the little girl is left in Capt. A ghost (Jimmie Walker), husband-hunting for his widow (Vernee Watson of ABC's "Carter Country''), spots an attractive prospect (Greg Morris); remembered by the crew as a tubby youngster, Gopher's sister (Melissa Sue Anderson) reappears grown, gorgeous and interested in Doc, and a divorced couple (Conrad Bain and Janet Leigh), seeing off their daughter (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her husband (Peter Coffield), is accidentally locked in a stateroom together on the ABC Television Network's "The Love Boat," SATURDAY, NOV. 11 (9:00-10:00 p.m., EST). The well-intentioned ghost, seen and heard only by his widow, experiences jealousy as his mission appears to be succeeding in ''Till Death Do Us Part - Maybe," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer. In "Chubs," written by Loraine Despres, overprotective Gopher entrusts his kid sister to Doc to stave off the ship's wolves, not realizing how sophisticated she apparently has become. The long-divorced couple meets accidentally aboard ship and has ample time to rediscover each other while trapped in an isolated cabin in "Locked Away," written by Howard Albrecht and Sol Weinstein.

In "Tony's Family," written by Henry Colman, crew members make a valiant effort to keep the stowaways Tony's wife (Mitzi Hoag) children (Tony La Torre,Kelly Greenwood, Jennifer Surprenant), Grandma (Renata Vanni) and uncle (Mario Bellini) a secret from Capt. Stubing. In "The Minister & the Stripper," written by Fred S. Fox and Seaman Jacobs, the influential church member's husband, a charitable non-member, have little luck convincing her to be kind until it's almost too late. In "Her Own Two Feet," written by Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel, although nearly blind, Audrey (Miss Allyson) refuses to use her white cane or admit her problem and leans heavily on her solicitous husband Bert (Van Johnson) until Doc intercedes.

In "Heads or Tails" written by Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel, Julie is amused by the keen rivalry between her two would-be suitors until she learns that she is the subject of a wager between them. In "The Little People," written by Barry Blitzer, the father and mother, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, have reason to sense that their son may be embarrassed about them for the first time. In "Mona of the Movies" the owner of a chain of auto repair shops feels he isn't in the same league as the movie star who actually wants to date him.

In "Folks From Home," written by series stars Fred Grandy and Bernie Kopell, Doc is fearful of the outcome when he is forced to operate, with ship-to-shore aid, following an accident. When the dignitary scheduled to present a trophy to Capt. Stubing fails to board ship, the frantic public relations representative grooms a love-smitten member of the ship's work gang to take the dignitary's place at the presentation ceremony in "The Captain's Cup," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer; and a stunning blonde who has heard of Doc's prowess with girls chooses Gopher instead. In "Legal Eagle," written by Gordon Farr, Ben Joelson and Art Baer from a story by Sidney Reznick and Larry Markes, a divorced man, who feels he was taken to the cleaners in divorce court, is initially enraged when he meets his wife's attorney socially.

In "Isosceles Triangle, written by Mark Fink, Connie Stevens portrays the beauty who can't make up her mind when the captain and Doc both make a play for her. Robert Urich (ABC's "Vega$'') and his actress-wife, Heather Menzies, play a man and his wife who return to the ship with an orphan played by Gabriel Melgar in "El Kid," written by Barry Blitzer. Rue McClanahan plays a hosp impressive businessman played by Dabney Coleman by traveling companions (Dave Madden and Dena Dietrich) who don't realize he is job hunting in "The Last Hundred Bucks," written by Ray Jessel.

In "Double Wedding," written by Ray Jessel, on the eve of their marriage ceremony, identical twin sisters come to the conclusion that each was really meant for the other's fiance and decide to take action to ensure long, happy marriages for all concerned. In "The Ventriloquists," written by Lan O'kun, the separated couple is working together for the last time to fulfill a contract when they begin to understand each other through use of their dummies. In "Julie Falls Hard," written by Michael Norell, Julie is starry-eyed after the handsome widower proposes because she is also fond of his young teenagers (Melora Hardin and Annrae Walterhouse) who are drawn to her.

In My Sister, Irene, sweethearts of long ago plan a reunion, but the woman is so insecure about looking older that she pretends to be her own sister. The series stars Gavin MacLeod as Capt. Crew members learn that Karl Schmidt (Conried) is considering Stubing to take over the prestigious cruise ship Lorelei, and go overboard to help their captain make an outstanding impression. Poor Gopher is so clumsy and tongue-tied upon meeting the girl of his dreams (Hayley Mills) that he envisions himself as fascinating figures who could capture her attention in "The Secret Life of Burl Smith," written by Barry Blitzer. Young Lucas, given a cruise by his mother, Millicent Raleigh (Juliet Mills), for his birthday, is caught in a parental tug of war when his father. Sherman Raleigh (Hedison), boards the ship to share his birthday in "Tug of War," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer, Reggie Jackson asks his old pal, Isaac, to help keep his identity a secret to avoid fan adulation, but changes his mind when he meets gorgeous Cleo (Telma Hopkins) in "The Designated Lover," written by Bob Fraser and Rob Dames (cq).

Isaac falls in love with a girl (Debbie Allen) who is struggling to make a marriage decision about another man; a recent heiress (Maren Jensen of ABC's "Battlestar Galactica'') believes that all men, including her former boyfriend (Dennis Cole), are after her money, and romance between two passengers (Gene Rayburn and Fannie Flagg) is threatened by the woman's snarling little dog, on the ABC Television Network's "The Love Boat," SATURDAY, FEB. 24 (9.00-10.00 pm., EST). While Isaac is befriending Selena Moore (ivis. Allen), traveling alone to consider whether she is prepared for the responsibilities of marriage, he is also falling in love with her in "The Decision," written by Henry Coleman. In "Poor Little Rich Girl," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer, mechanic Alan Harmon (Cole) can't convince former waitress Suzanna Wells (Ms. Jensen) of his love for her until Capt Stubing suggests a most unusual ploy. In "Love Me, Love My Dog," written by Barry Blitzer, it's smooth sailing romantically for Mason Randolph (Rayburn) until the dog that Mrs. Alicia Finch (Ms. Flagg) has smuggled aboard takes an instant dislike to him.

In "Funny Valentine," written by Fred Grandy and Bernie Kopell, Julie's friend, Murphy (Ms. Eogar), entertaining on the cruise as a palm reader, not only assures dubious Capt. Stubing that he has a romantic future, but also proceeds to make it come true by falling for him. Gopher's plain neighbor, Sylvia (Ms. Dworkin), is sadly lacking in confidence until Gopher sends her roses anonymously. Meanwhile, an equally shy young man, Monroe (Zane Lasky), is watching jealously, in "The Wallflower," written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer. In "A Home Is Not a Home," written by John V. Hanrahan and Tom Dosenais, Molly and Ned (Ms. Pearl and Godfrey), a lively older couple running off to Mexico to get married, are thwarted by his son, Francis (Berlinger), and her daughter, Rowena (Ms. Donahue, until the younger couple realizes that their parents have much in common.

Julie ends up in the middle of an unusual love triangle when the visiting 13-year-old son of the head of the cruise line develops a crush on her at the same time that she is trying to win over a charming older passenger. Two longtime acquaintances find their attempt at building a romance complicated by their parents' antagonistic relationship: her father is publisher of the newspaper where he works; and his mother is leading the efforts to unionize the workers. In honor of Capt. Stubing's fifth anniversary at the helm, the crew pays two men to build a wooden model of the ship. The builders are left scrambling to undo the damage after the present accidentally gets smashed.

A singer tries to persuade his manager to let him abandon the shock tactics that made him famous and let his music speak for itself. He becomes even more determined to establish some credibility after he falls for a deaf friend of Julie's. Doc finds himself caught in the middle when an old friend grows tired of her inattentive husband's tendency to put gambling ahead of their relationship. Isaac becomes convinced that a couple plans to murder Capt. Stubing. Everyone initially believes that he is just too caught up in the murder mystery that he has been reading, but the captain and Gopher soon begin to share his suspicions.

A husband feels neglected, a woman meets a beau she thought was killed in battle, and April returns to learn Julie's job.

When Gopher series star Fred Grandy and his fun loving mother (Ethel Merman) begin their irrepressible clowning on a Mother's Day Cruise, his dad feels left out; a middle-aged husband and wife get the surprise of their lives when they discover there's a baby on the way, and a recent bride (Beth Howland) gets an accelerated course in motherhood when she has to deal with her husband's (Ken Berry) strong-willed teen-age daughters (Shelley Juttner and Michele Tobin) when the "The Love Boat" sails on the ABC Television Network, SATURDAY, MAY 12 (9:00-10:00 0.m., EDT). In "Third Wheel," written by Lee Aronshon, Gopher, who has never been close to his conservative father, Elliot Smith (Cummings), asks his mother, Ros (Ms. Merman), to perform a musical number with him for the crew show. Later they both realize they have hurt Elliot, who used to do the number with Ros in college. Maggie O'Brien (Ms. Fabray) learns from Doc that she is pregnant and dreads breaking the news to husband Mac (Nelson), who is elatedly planning a future for just the two of them now that the last of their grown children has left home, in "Grandmother's Day," written by Ann Gibbs and Joel Kimmel. In "Second String Mom," written by Lee Aronsohn, Lee Noble (Ms. Howland) is beginning to lose hope of winning the affection of her stepdaughters when they make a forbidden shore trip and suddenly need her help.

The ship voyages to Alaska for the wedding of a wealthy heir and the granddaughter of a fiercely independent oil man. The Love Boat transports a wedding party to the site of the ceremony –Alaska. En route: 1. The groom's estranged parents (Ray Milland and Eleanor Parker) are reunited. 2. Their son (Mark Harmon) is wooed by a lifelong friend much to the chagrin of his  intended (Lisa Herman). 3. The bride's widowed father (Lorne Greene) falls for another member of the wedding party (Audrey Lindley). 4. Julie contemplates marriage to a former lover (Tony Roberts) living in Alaska. 

The engaged couple gets married despite numerous obstacles, and Julie encounters heartbreak upon surprising an ex-lover.

An older couple finds its attempts at romance complicated by the presence of her obnoxious, golddigging daughter and his overprotective manservant. Julie's roommate from cruise director training takes a cruise with her young son. Julie and Tina each envy the life the other has chosen for herself. When Tina offers some ideas for an upcoming party, Julie resents her friend for moving in on her territory. A young couple's romance begins to fall apart because the man is obsessed with analyzing the relationship and comparing even the most minor developments to the "stages" he went through with past girlfriends.

A doctor who had planned on taking the cruise as a vacation cares for Doc when he comes down with the flu. He is initially a difficult patient, but soon begins to fall for his physician. A former dancer who has now opened her own school tries to convince her ex-partner to come to Germany to teach for her. He is reluctant to give up his life with his much younger (and very talented) partner/girlfriend, even though he is putting his health at risk and holding her back from a potentially successful career. A free-spirited woman invites a cab driver along on the cruise after her boyfriend stands her up.

Upon learning that an IRS agent is on ship to audit him, Captin Stubing tries to get her to loosen up and have some fun; a newlywed couple is on board for their honeymoon and the groom is less than thrilled that his new bride's ex is on board, looking to win her back; a tabloid reporter is trying to dig up some dirt on a female entertainer he suspects is having a rendezvous with a secret lover.  

1. Julie recruits Gopher to fill in for an absentee singer. 2. Two carefree sisters, Olivia and Joan, embark on their annual cruise, but with one change from past vacations—a tag-along husband, Byron. 3. Janet Latham, a widow, whose late husband sent her a rose every day, is wooed by the florist, Henry Dobson, who delivered them.

Isaac shocks the crew when he writes about them in a tell-all novel; a celebrity lookalike tries to convince a newfound romance that he isn't who she thinks he is; a reunited husband and wife share a deep secret.

Gopher befriends a young woman who is constantly put upon by her mean-spirited stepmother and two gawky step-sisters. Gopher takes note of her singing talent and tries to help her get an audition with the famous singer who is performing on the cruise. A sports broadcaster clashes with his female partner. She grows tired of his sexist remarks and challenges him to a series of athletic contests, with the loser having to quit his or her job. A disabled man demands his brother's constant attention, complicating his potential romance.

Capt. Stubing receives a letter from his daughter, Vicki. When he tries to call her, he learns that she has run away from her aunt and uncle's home. She shows up on the ship and reveals that she has read her mother's diary, and now knows that the captain is her father. She wants to stay with him, but he feels that it is best that he return her. Vicki's aunt reveals that she is getting a divorce and wants to send her children away for a while so that they won't be affected by the proceedings. Capt. Stubing and Vicki are thrilled by the chance to live together on the ship. Julie plays matchmaker for two shy, old-fashioned people who are unaccustomed to the workings of modern romance. A man is annoyed by the presence of the woman who deadlocked the jury for the attempted murder trial on which they both served, leading to a mistrial. They constantly argue about the case.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders come on board as part of a charity fundraiser for an Acapulco orphanage. One of the cheerleaders enlists the help of her friends to dodge the advances of a persistent suito. A cheerleader's mother mistakenly fears that her daughter is trying to steal her boyfriend. A man, who has been lying to his boss about having a family, hires a group of actors to pose as his mother, wife and son for the company's "family cruise." A divorcing couple plots to steal a valuable gem, which is hidden in a lamp that keeps getting passed between crew members. A famous dancer/actress who is helping with the charity event repeatedly declines Capt. Stubing's request that she take part in the performance.

A jealous Stacy comes to regret pushing Mark away. Wendy and Bill try to stop her mother from leaving after she misinterprets their purchase of wedding rings. Paul tries to keep his boss from learning about his girlfriend; and Lisa from learning about his "family." The Haymans have second thoughts about the diamond heist--and their break-up--after meeting the kids from the orphanage. Stella stings Elliot when she offers her harsh opinion about his play.

The crew plans a surprise birthday party for Julie. Isaac, Gopher and Doc try to keep her from getting suspicious by claiming that all of their secretive conversations are part of the "Brotherhood of the Sea," a clandestine organization that only accepts men. This infuriates Julie, who becomes determined to break down the gender barrier at any cost. She winds up ignoring a potential suitor while the guys try to distract her by putting her through an "initiation" process. A philandering man relies on his awkward but sweet assistant to keep his various girlfriends from learning about his activities. A young gymnast grows tired of the pressure placed on her by her overbearing father, who is determined to mold her into an Olympic champion. A lonely rich boy, travelling on the cruise alone, tries to encourage her to have some fun.

A man tries to avoid a wedding by faking a terminal illness. Capt. Stubing hopes for another chance at love with his recently divorced ex-flame. Gopher must keep an eye on two teenagers posing as newlyweds.

A scientist researches romantic reactions; an out-of-work football player finds a new career; a woman nearing 40 hunts for a husband.

Gopher finds romance with a recently separated passenger--until her estranged husband suddenly shows up and announces his intention of winning her back. A woman tries to pry her soon-to-be-ex-husband away from his girlfriend by coming on the cruise and rooming in the cabin next to theirs. Two distinguished passengers, who squared off in a boxing match decades earlier, renew their rivalry. They schedule a fight on the ship to settle the score once and for all.

1. Doc and his ex-wife; Samantha Bricker, discover they are still married. 2. Ben Carter, a financially troubled man finds $2000 in a jacket he borrows from gambler Buddy Redmond. 3. Danny Harris, a 12-year-old, resents the blossoming romance between his mother, Madeline, and his history teacher, Mr. Hurley. 

April returns to the ship with her fiance, a former used car salesman turned manager whom she has known only a few weeks. The crew is certain that the man is scamming her. A couple comes aboard the ship to finish a script before filing for divorce. A man is shocked to run into the daughter he gave up for adoption and her adoptive mother. He agonizes over whether to tell her the truth about her parentage.

A singer worries that his hillbilly relatives will embarrass him and ruin his chance of catching a record producer's eye. The producer becomes attracted to the singer's sister, who begins to doubt her commitment to her fiancé from back home. An author pictures the family as potential characters for her next book. She poses as a mountain woman to get the grandfather to open up to her. Doc, Isaac and Gopher room with Capt. Stubing after their cabins are flooded. They proceed to drive him crazy, and won't let him get any sleep. Two couples take the cruise together. One of the women tries to convince her friend that their spouses are having an affair.

Danny blames his family when Steve fails to show for his performance, leading to a rift with his father and grandfather. Kitty considers leaving her family to marry Steve. The captain lays down the law to his annoying houseguests, who end up at each other's throats. Dave finds out about Frank and Cynthia's affair, which leaves the future of both marriages in doubt.

Doc's plans for a rendezvous are spoiled when the woman's recently dumped (and extremely depressed) sister tags along on the cruise. Doc tries to get some privacy by having a playboy romance the sister. Vicki helps a young boy's efforts to reunite his divorced parents. A woman tries to keep her husband on a short leash, as he has recently undergone heart surgery and she fears he will drop dead at any moment.

Capt. Stubing is wary of the presence of his brother, a notorious scam artist who seems to have set his sights on a wealthy passenger. A woman uses a computer to track down the perfect father for her child, whom she follows on the cruise. Julie's widowed aunt falls for a man who reminds her of her late husband.

Gopher invites his widowed mother onto the ship in the hopes of cheering her up, but is hurt by her seemingly cheerful attitude, which he interprets as an insult to his father. A group of buddies takes a cruise. One of the men meets a woman who is a regular customer at the restaurant where he works. He lies about his identity because he thinks she would be put off by the fact that he is a waiter. A comic's romance with the reporter who is writing a feature about him appears doomed after she takes offense to his act.

A friend of Capt. Stubing's runs into his long-lost old flame, who has since become a nun. He professes his love for her, forcing her to make a difficult decision about her future. A woman pursues a shy astronomer, mistakenly believing that he is the renowned sex therapist/author who is travelling incognito on the ship. A young woman's pushy mother constantly nags her to find a wealthy husband. Gopher tries to cheer the woman by asking her to dance and giving her what he thinks is a cheap toy ring, unaware that it is actually a passenger's lost engagement ring.

Julie worries that her brilliant nuclear physicist friend will never find a man because her intelligence intimidates suitors. She encourages her to act dumb to attract a man's attention. Vicki befriends a wealthy young passenger. While exploring the ship, they discover a stowaway, a young boy who wants to visit his mother in Mexico. A jealous husband terrifies the crew as he constantly threatens the guys, who he suspects are coming on to his wife.

A man spends beyond his means while trying to lavish his recently hospitalized wife with gifts. Capt. Stubing and Vicki face an interview with a child services worker, who will decide whether the captain can have full custody of his daughter. A newlywed couple has trouble consummating its relationship because the presence of the bride's bodyguards (her family is "connected") makes the groom nervous.

Vicki develops a crush on a popular singer, but soon has her heart broken when she misinterprets his kindness as something more.
